Fred Allery Obituary

Fred "Sonny" Sanford Allery Jr.

August 9, 1925 - July 8, 2025

WHITEWATER - Fred "Sonny" Sanford Allery Jr., of Whitewater, went into the arms of his Lord on June 8, 2025, in Billings, where he had resided with his daughter, Connie and son-in-law, Butch Lovshin for the past two and a half years.

Born August 9, 1925, to Fred and Agnes Allery, he was delivered by his maternal grandmother, Catherine LaSante, in Malta.

He attended his first three years of school at the St. Paul Mission in Hays, which was run by nuns. He then attended Whitewater School until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1943. He was stationed in the South Pacific aboard the USS Reno when it was torpedoed on November 3, 1944. Fred later became a Life Member of the Malta VFW Post #4067.

He met the love of his life, Mary Jane Sinclair, during shore leave in Portland, Ore., and they were married on May 1, 1945. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Fred worked for the U.S. Postal Service for a short time in Portland and Great Falls. In 1947, Fred and Mary returned to Whitewater Creek, where they ranched and raised sheep.

Fred "Sonny" drove the Whitewater School bus route for 17 years. He took his team of horses and wagon on the Milk River Wagon Train for several years and later developed a passion for horse racing.

Fred was known for his quiet strength, sharp wit, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. He had a generous heart and a strong work ethic, never hesitating to lend a hand to a neighbor or friend. He loved the outdoors and had a special bond with animals, especially his horses. Fred was a man of deep faith, humility, and integrity, who led by example and left a legacy of love, resilience, and service.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary; daughters, Barbara Dunbar (survived by her husband, Archie Dunbar) of Whitewater and June Wade of Payette, Idaho; son-in-law, Richard Wade; sister, Marlene; and brothers, Louie, George, and John. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Agnes Allery.

He is survived by daughters, Anna (Gerald) Flom of San Antonio; Susan (Ron) Kaess of Wheaton, Minn.; Connie (Butch) Lovshin of Billings; and son, Fred "Freddie" Allery III of Malta. Also surviving are his sister, Alfreda (Allery) White of Cody, Wyo.; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandson. Fred leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and lifelong friendships throughout the North Country.

Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be held on July 12, 2025, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Malta. A luncheon will follow in the church basement, sponsored by St. Mary's Altar Society.

Private burial at a later date.

"Well done, good and faithful servant." – Matthew 25:23.
