Marianne Llewellyn Obituary

Marianne McNeely Llewellyn - "Grandmimi" to her eleven beloved grandchildren - passed away in Billings on October 31, 2025. She was born in Billings on October 15, 1954, to Willard and Anna McNeely.

A lifelong learner and dedicated educator, Marianne graduated from Central High School in 1972, later earning her Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Montana College in 1989. While teaching full-time and raising five children, she went on to complete a Master of Education from Eastern in 1995, specializing in English and Spanish-a testament to her remarkable drive and love of language.

Marianne began her teaching career in 1990, commuting daily from Billings to Red Lodge to teach English and Spanish at Red Lodge High School. After several years, she shortened her commute to Laurel High School, where she inspired countless students until her retirement in 2019.

Honored as a three-time Fulbright Scholar, Marianne was an avid world traveler who studied in Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, Spain and China.

Marianne embraced travel not as an escape, but as an education. She delighted in new experiences-from local cuisine to art to literature, connecting deeply with people wherever she went. Her curiosity was boundless, her laughter infectious, and her conversations always thoughtful. She was a voracious reader and a trusted, compassionate friend to many.

Marianne's greatest joy was her family.

She is survived by her five children: Jennifer Bell (Mike) of Bend, Ore., and grandchildren Eponine, Liya, and Carys; Eric Llewellyn (Sachiko) of Santa Clara, Calif., and grandchildren Kazuma, Riku, and Saya; Patience Llewellyn (Aaron Murphy) of Billings, and grandchildren Mira and Wesley; Eve James (Bill) of Portland, Ore., and grandchildren Daniel, Linda, and Kenneth; and Leonard "Chas" Llewellyn (Cortney) of Billings; as well as her siblings Dave McNeely, Don McNeely, and Kathy Middleton (Scott); and her former husband, Lee Llewellyn.

A celebration of Marianne's life will be held at a later date. Her curiosity, kindness, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Yesterday

Marianne and I were good friends in the EMC days. I remember we were in a 400 level Spanish class together and she had the highest grade on the exam. I had the 2nd highest. It was fun comparing experiences in all of the Spanish classes we had together. Condolences to her family.

Marianne was one of my dearest friends from way back in the days of living on N 30th. Between me, Marianne and Kathie, we had 12 rambunctious children who ruled the neighborhood. I have fond memories of the 3 of us escaping for short walks around the block, or sipping on coffee or wine, engaged in thoughtful or silly talks. All 3 of us were attending EMC back then, so we scheduled our classes to make sure one of us was available to help out with childcare. Those memories live with me. She was a gifted woman of many talents and will be missed by so many. My condolences to all her children and grandchildren who she was so proud of !

The Gilluly kids loved Marianne! Her house was always open to us (probably even when she didn´t want us there!). Sending you all our love and hugs and condolences!

Yesterday

While she was only eight years my senior, she was one of my neighborhood's Moms. She was open and welcoming, and I am so sorry for her family and students. What a lovely person she was!
