Stephen James Barter Jr., 76, of Billings, passed away Monday, Sept. 26, 2011.
He was born on Sept. 10, 1935, in Chelsea, Mass., to Stephen, Sr. and Janet Barter.
On April 17, 1975, Stephen married Joanne H. Barter at the U.S. Navy Chapel in Oakland, Calif.
Stephen served in the United States Navy for 30 years. After retiring honorably from the Navy, he became an instructor at the University of West Florida as a Substance Abuse Instructor. He also worked with the NASAP prevention program.
He was very active in AA, being a popular member, and enjoyed "Paint by Number" acrylic painting projects.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents and brothers John and Paul.
He is survived by his children, Stephen James III of North Carolina, Mark of South Carolina and Gary of Virginia. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside services with military honors are pending.
