Jerry Colvin
Gerald DeWitt Colvin, Jr., aged 74, died peacefully in his home on January 7, 2021. Jerry was born to Gerald and Serena Colvin on March 2, 1947 in Tuscaloosa, AL. The oldest of four children, he spent his childhood in Jasper, AL, attending Farmstead School and Walker County High School. In the 10th grade, he asked Jimmie Ann Bennett to the "W" Club Picnic and began a relationship that would grow in love and depth over the next 59 years. An incredibly gifted and determined athlete and scholar, Jerry attended Samford University on a football scholarship. While there, he also played basketball and baseball. He and Jimmie Ann married on June 21, 1968, spending their first years together in Birmingham while they finished their undergraduate studies. After graduation, they moved to Tuscaloosa where Jerry attended The University of Alabama Law School, again on a full scholarship. It was there, in 1970 and 1972, that they welcomed their first two children, sons Whit and Jeff. After a federal clerkship with Judge Sam Pointer, he began a long and distinguished career as an attorney in Birmingham. Jerry and Jimmie Ann moved their family to Vestavia Hills, AL, where they were blessed with two more children - a son, Andrew, and daughter, Carrie. Jerry balanced his time beautifully, managing the demands of a growing law practice and busy home life. His quiet strength and gentle spirit laid the foundation for his family. He enjoyed church league sports, coaching soccer and baseball, going to dance recitals, and traveling with his wife and children. In later years, he loved golfing with his buddies, taking extensive road trips with Jimmie Ann, and boating with his grandchildren in Orange Beach, AL, his favorite place to be. He was so proud of his family and was happiest when everyone was together. Until the end, Jerry began his days in silent meditative prayer, humbly allowing God to fill and transform him. He took great pleasure in God's creation, observing birds and deer in his yard daily, and deeply loved God's people, especially his spiritual family at Disciples Fellowship. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Serena Colvin. He is survived by a large and adoring family: wife, Jimmie Ann Colvin; sons Gerald DeWitt Colvin, III (Melissa) of Birmingham, Jeffrey Harwell Colvin (Shelly), Andrew Bennett Colvin (Jessica), daughter Carrie Colvin Alling (Matt) all of Nashville, TN; grandchildren Gerald DeWitt Colvin, IV, William Carter Colvin, Lydia Jane Alling, Laura Ann Keller Alling, Sara Ruth Alling, and Jeffrey Harwell Colvin, Jr.; siblings Edward Veston Colvin, Serena Colvin Hunter and Carol Ann Robinson. In honor of their beloved husband, father and Granddaddy, the family requests that donations be made to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center or Disciples Fellowship Benevolence Fund.

Oh what a blessing the entire Colvin family was to our very young and inexperienced family. We were blessed to share a time with you. Our prayers are with you all as you continue on without him here. May every memory bring you joy and May the God of all comfort bring you comfort.

Dear Ann and Family, I was so saddened to hear about Jerry's passing. I ran across this old Mountain Eagle clipping today with both Jerry's and David's photos. I also remembered a poem that I can associate with Jerry so well. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. If Heaven can be made better, it will be with men like him. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

May God`s enduring peace be with Jerry`s family. I, Mike, have known Jerry since our college days. Jerry was a good student, athlete and attorney, but most of all a good and Godly person. Now he is at rest with the Saints in light. Yay

Jerry was my very best friend in law school. We studied together, rode to class together, played football together, and ate meals together with our young families. I have never known a nicer guy. He was pleasant and kind, and I regret that we were separated after law school by business offices that were distant to one another. But the distance never dimmed the cherish memories of our associations. Jimmie Ann and children will be in my thoughts and prayers. He will be sorely missed until we are reunited. John E.
