Stanley Dowe Bynum

Stanley Dowe Bynum, age 79, of Mountain Brook, died Tuesday, October 28, 2025. Born on June 5, 1946, he was raised in Talladega, where he excelled in tennis and as an Eagle Scout. He attended Indian Springs School and Princeton University, graduating cum laude from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He received his J.D. degree from the University of Alabama School of Law, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review and a Hugo Black Scholar. He began his legal career in 1971 at Bradley Arant Rose and White in Birmingham, with primary areas of practice in construction contracts and litigation, product liability defense, and international law. He remained a partner in the Construction Procurement Group until his retirement.
In addition to tennis, he enjoyed canoeing the Locust Fork and hiking the Sipsey Wilderness. As a Boy Scout he had helped lay the Odum Trail along the ridgeline of Mt. Cheaha. His membership in the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham, where he had perfect attendance for 30 years, gave him great pleasure.
He is survived by his wife, Lucie, by his son, Julian, his wife, Jillian, and their children Mason, Knox and Willa; by his daughter, Mary Eugenia Barrow, her husband, Charles, and their children Virginia and Julian. He was preceded in death by his son, Dowe, and is survived by his wife, Emily, and their children Ann Margaret, Eliza and Jack. He is also survived by his sisters, Marcia Limbaugh and Kathleen Lalor, his brother, Curtis, and their families.
A graveside service will be Monday, November 10, at 10:30 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery.
