Suzanne Wehby Lucas passed peacefully, after a brief illness, in her home early in the morning of July 2, 2025. She was a devoted mother, stepmother, grandmother and great grandmother and cherished friend to many. She will be greatly missed by all.
She was born on April 22, 1939, at Saint Vincents Hospital to Nolan John Wehby and Ethel Abbott Wehby. A lifelong resident of Birmingham, she attended St. Paul's Catholic School and John Carroll High School where she graduated in 1957. Upon graduation, she attended Birmingham Southern College where she studied Botany and History.
Suzanne loved wildflowers, antiquing, traveling, and lunching with her numerous friends. In her younger days she spent countless hours crisscrossing the State of Alabama looking for that special bargain on antique furniture. She always had strong interest and affection for wildflowers many times pushing her children out of the car on the side of the highway to pick a coveted wildflower, in particular her favorite Queen Anne's Lace. Another passion was travel, as she took every opportunity for a trip. Whether a short trip to a historical site in Alabama, a trip to the lake with her friends or a long trip to Europe, she was always ready to go. Annual traditions like family holiday gatherings, birthday celebrations, tea parties, and her festive Halloween party were always great fun and important to her. Suzanne had a great appreciation for community and the arts as evidenced by her involvement with the Jefferson County Historical Society and her years of volunteer work at the Birmingham Museum of Art. She loved her years of Friday Coffee
Concerts with her family and friends, her spirited Alabama football group and being an active member of the Argos Club and the Mountain Park Drive Garden Club.
A life long Catholic, she was incredibly involved in volunteering at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church where she was a long-standing member of sixty-five years. She particularly enjoyed working as part of the St. Francis flower guild for many years. In addition, she served the Church by serving as a wedding coordinator for several years. At St. Francis, she enjoyed the wonderful work of the Highlands Sewing Circle that supported the Catholic Charities. Suzanne was blessed with many old friends but had an innate ability to develop new and meaningful friendships throughout her life, especially through her work at the Social Security Administration and Weddings Etc. In 1979, she married a second time to Alfred Spear Lucas, Jr., who quickly became the love of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Al Lucas, stepson Thomas W. Lucas and grandchildren, Stephen Christopher Lucas, Carolee Taylor and Justin Taylor. She is survived by her son, Thomas Mills Nesbitt, IV (Julie), daughter, Suzanne (Lelie) Nesbitt MacLeod (David) and grandchildren, Thomas Mills Nesbitt V, Elise Faircloth Nesbitt and Alexander Pearce MacLeod. From her second marriage, she is survived by the following children, Cathy Lucas (Thomas Lucas's
surviving spouse), Alfred John Lucas (Laura), Mary Lucas Mercer (Richard), Winifred Lucas Martinez, Michael Joseph Lucas (Tina), Rev. William Lucas, Cecelia (Cece) Lucas Burrus (Danny), and grandchildren Tommy Lucas, Chad Pitts (Maggie), Alan Lucas (Catherine), Bryan Lucas, Maretta Ashford (David), Catherine Agricola (Taylor), Allison Leaver (Ben), Abby LeGrone (Kirk), Lindsey Hilner (Jason), Jessica Mercer, A.J Mercer (Katie), Will Martinez (Kat), Alex Martinez (Annie), Luke Martinez, Kyle Lucas (Sherry), Travis Lucas, Ryan Burrus (Nicole), Stephanie Wesson (Marcus), Caitlyn Burrus, while also being blessed with twenty-three great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Annette Sanders and Demetrius Parker for their years of dedication and friendship in addition to her most resolute and compassionate care providers who shepherded her through the final months of life. Without the care of Cynthia Zavala, Dee Ross, Tasha Mitchell, Janice Richardson, and Rebecca Hall, she would not have been able to return to her beloved home enabling her to pass in peace. Her family remains truly grateful for their loving care.
A service will be held in celebration of Suzanne's life on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2 Xavier Circle, Birmingham, Alabama. Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 in the Church Vestibule, a Mass will be said from 11:00 am till noon and a family graveside service held immediately after the Mass at Elmwood Cemetery.
