Barbara Currell Obituary

Barbara Ann Leifur Currell

February 13, 1935 - October 20, 2025

Born February 13, 1935, in Bismarck, North Dakota, Barbara passed away peacefully at home on October 20, 2025, at the age of 90, surrounded by family who loved her dearly.

Barbara graduated from the University of North Dakota with a degree in Journalism. During her time there, she was a proud and active member of the Delta Gamma Sorority, serving as president and building cherished lifelong friendships.

After college, Barbara married and devoted herself to raising four children while traveling the world as a military wife. Her family made homes in Wisconsin, Virginia, Hawaii, Okinawa, and California. After raising her children, Barbara began her 2nd career and earned her teaching degree. She enjoyed teaching kindergarten, where her warmth, patience, and joy inspired everyone around her. She was honored as Teacher of the Year in Twentynine Palms, California, a testament to her talent and commitment to her students.

After retiring, Barbara moved to Mountain View, California, to be near her daughters Susan Currell and Nancy (Vince) Raciti. She embraced an active and joyful life filled with hiking, church activities, potluck dinners, and YMCA classes. Her favorite role of all was being "Gram" to her grandchildren Zachary Williams and Katie (Ben) Roberts, who adored her. Together, they shared countless antics, laughter, and love.

When her grandchildren were grown, Barbara moved to Smyrna, Georgia, to be near her beloved son William Currell, where the two shared many wonderful years of adventure, travel, and fun.

Barbara was a youthful 90-year-old and embraced life to the fullest - taking regular walks through her neighborhood, driving to the Wolfe Center for weightlifting and balance classes, and faithfully attending Mass. She was a devoted servant of the Lord and a steadfast prayer warrior.

She will always be remembered for her fun-loving spirit, kind heart, and good-natured humor. Barbara brought warmth and joy to everyone she met, and her family will forever cherish the time they were blessed to share with her.

Barbara was preceded in death by her son John Richard Currell, II; her parents Conrad and Grace Leifur; her sister Carol (Leifur) Johnson, and her brother Dr. Conrad William (Bill) Leifur Jr.

Barbara's legacy of love, laughter, and devotion will continue to inspire all who knew her.

A private family memorial is planned to celebrate her wonderful life.

I just got to know Barbara the pass couple of years through the Wolfe center. She was my cornhole buddy. I would set it up and we would practice tossing for a while. I had no idea that she shared a birthday with my Mother, nor did I know that she lived around the corner. After reading about her amazing life, I wish that I had had more time to get to know her. She will be missed.
