Bessie M. Schaefer, 98, Sioux City, Iowa, formerly of Mobridge, S.D., died March 26, 2002, in a Sioux City retirement center. Services will be held at noon Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mobridge, with the Revs. Brian Simon and Richard Ortmeier officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Mobridge.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church, where a rosary will be said at 11:30 a.m.
Bessie M. Schaefer was born June 22, 1903, to George A. and Jennie (Coles) Minard in Bridgewater, S.D., the youngest of 13 children. In 1910 her family moved to Ellendale and she grew up on her parents' farm and attended rural school. She attended the Normal Industry School in Ellendale and then went to work for Montana- Dakota Utilities as a bookkeeper in Ellendale. In 1936 she transferred to Mobridge and worked for MDU at a position she held until her marriage to Leander H. "Dick" Schaefer on July 19, 1941. Following their marriage they made their home in Mobridge where she worked for Dr. Spiry at the Spiry Clinic for a number of years. Since her retirement she had lived in Mobridge and was recently living at the Holy Spirit Retirement Center in Sioux City.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the church altar society, the Mobridge Senior Citizens and Women of the Moose.
Many nieces and nephews survive her.
She was preceded in death by her husband on May 1, 1968; five brothers; and seven sisters.
Casketbearers will be Richard Schaefer, Michael Schaefer, Thomas Schaefer, LaVerne Schaefer, Ed Reis, Merle Higgs and Bill Omafray.
Readers will be Ree Klinkhammer and Tom Schaefer. Jeff Anderson will be the lector. Eucharistic minister will be Marilyn Anderson. Organist will be Marge Mertz.
Congregational hymns will be "Sing To The Mountains," "On Eagles Wings," "Be Not Afraid," "Let There Be Peace On Earth" and "Oh Come All Ye Faithful."
