Craig R. Murie, 66, Fargo, passed away on Feb. 25, 2017, at ManorCare in Fargo.
Craig was born on Feb. 19, 1951, in Grafton, to Robert and Faye (Tallackson) Murie. The family lived in Langdon, Mapes, Perley, Wimbeldon, and Edgeley, where Craig graduated from high school. He completed his undergraduate degree at Valley City State University in 1974 with majors in mathematics and physical education and received his Master's degree in Mathematics Education from NDSU in 2004. While attending Valley City State he played basketball and was named most valuable graduating senior in the conference.
He married Karen Hansen in 1972 in Valley City. The birth of son, Kyle in 1982 was the greatest joy of his life. Kyle, Craig and Karen have enjoyed attending many concerts by "older" rock and roll groups.
Craig taught math and coached various levels of girls and boys basketball in Raymond, Minn., Harvey, and for 23 years at Shanley High School. As head coach of the Shanley girls, he led them to four state basketball titles. He was also honored as Class A Girls Basketball Coach of the Year twice. Craig also coached a local AAU boys basketball team. Craig taught Sunday School for many years at Edgewood United Methodist Church. He has been a lecturer in the NDSU math department since 2004 and has also worked as a spotter for the NDSU football announcer for 38 seasons. Craig enjoyed working the officials' table for NDSU mens' and womens' basketball for 27 years. He was recognized by NDSU womens' soccer, softball, volleyball and mens' football players for his mentorship.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert; infant brother, Raymond; and brother-in-law, Dan Bybee.
Craig is survived by his son, Kyle (Erica) Murie of Portland, Ore.; former wife and best friend, Karen Hansen Murie, Fargo; mother, Faye Murie, Apache Junction, Ariz.; sisters, Candace (Greg) Hochhalter, Bismarck, and Lori Bybee, Spiritwood Lake; niece, Kayla (Jeremy) Anderson; nephew, Nathan Hochhalter; three great nieces and one great nephew. He is also survived by many Tallackson, Murie and Hansen relatives.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to a charity of donor's choice.
There will be a celebration and fellowship of Craig's life on Sunday, March 5, at 2 p.m., at the Sanctuary Events Center in Fargo, with visitation from 1 to 2 p.m.
