Dalles Krause Obituary

Dalles Edwin Krause Sr.

June 10, 1933 - December 24, 2025

Dalles Edwin Krause Sr., 92, Hazen, ND, passed away on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2025. Services will be held on Tuesday, December 30, at 10:00 AM CT at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen with Pastor Walt Wolff officiating. Burial will be at the Peace Lutheran Cemetery. Following the services, a luncheon will be held in the church basement.

Visitation will be held on Monday, December 29, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen.

Dalles was born June 10, 1933, to Edwin and Pauline (Rahn) Krause in Hazen. He lived briefly in Beulah, ND, and Mott, ND, due to his father's work at the local creameries. In 1944, his father, Edwin, and grandfather, Fred Krause, purchased Krause's Super Valu in Carson, ND, where Dalles was raised, educated, and began his long-time career in the grocery business, starting as an eleven-year-old carry-out.

After graduating from Carson High School in 1951, he spent the next decade attending college and playing basketball at Bismarck Junior College, serving in the Army – including the Korean War, and completing his education at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND. Soon after, Dalles returned to his true passions – the grocery industry and family. He married Marilyn (O'Connell) Krause on May 1, 1960, and less than a year later, the young couple moved to Hazen to run their very own Krause's Super Valu.

It was in Hazen where this big man with an even bigger heart started his family and created many wonderful friendships and memories. Dalles and Marilyn's grocery store expanded from their first location on Main Street next to the creamery building to a larger location in 1982, on nearby Central Avenue in Hazen. This expansion allowed for deli, bakery, additional perishables, produce, and an adjacent liquor store. The Krause family also expanded during this time, with the birth of their children, Karla, Kari, Kandi, and D (Dalles Jr.), all of whom would become future employees of Krause's Super Valu; Kari and D later became the owners in 1995.

In addition to his dedication to his family and business, Dalles was also a big supporter of the community, area youth, and a servant of God. He was a member of the Hazen Park Board, Hazen Chamber, Jaycees, Business Challenge, Greater North Dakota Association, North Dakota Grocers Association, Peace Lutheran Church Council, and The Gideons International. He was recognized by his peers and awarded North Dakota Grocer of the Year, the Spirit of America Award, and Bismarck State College Alumni of the Year. To this day, we hear many Big Dalles stories shared by past employees, former teenage carry-outs, and vendors from across the state. He left a big footprint in our community (and in general) and was well-known for his quick wit and response of "I'm Nice" when asked how he was doing.

One of Dalles's greatest rewards was the role of Grandpa to his own grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as many other kids over the years. It was not uncommon to see him at the hockey rink, basketball court, football field, and baseball diamond, even this past summer. He instilled in his family his love of faith, music, and all God's creations, as well as his affection for the New York Yankees and the Green Bay Packers.

Dalles enjoyed his last days surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren, sharing his love and laughter with them. His strong faith was further solidified by his passing on Christmas Eve, reminding us of the importance of faith, family, and always believe. John 3:16. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."

He will be deeply missed by his wife of 65 years, Marilyn of Hazen; his children, Karla (Ken) Warner of Tucson, Arizona, Kari (Mark) Olson, Kandi (Dave) Olson, and Dalles Jr. (Beth) Krause, all of Hazen; his exchange-student daughter Masako (Tomo) Sano of Yokohama, Japan; ten grandchildren: Christopher (Ann) and Jon (Kelci) Rude, Mark Tyler (Danielle), Riley (Ellen), Jared (Kendra), and Rory (Madi) Olson, Shelbi and Kameri (Maurice Whiters Jr.) Olson, Grant and Trevor Krause, and Koyo and Shoyo Sano; five great-grandchildren: KinLee, Londyn, Olivia, Crew, and AddieLynn; his sister-in-law Shirley O'Connell of Carson; along with many nephews, nieces, and friends made across the miles.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Iris and Robert Lauf, and Eileen and Arnie Mund; brothers-in-law, Don O'Connell, Jim O'Connell and his wife, Fran; sister-in-law, Patricia Scoles, and her husband, Pat; and niece, Joan Deal.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hazen Parks & Rec, PO Box 717 Hazen, ND 58545 or Peace Lutheran Church.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.

What a meaningful tribute to Mr. Krause. I´ve never cried when reading an obituary, but the mention of John 3:16 did it for me. His love for God and his fellow mankind stands out strong.
God bless his family and friends as you go forward with memories.

Here is a photo of the boys at the "All School Reunion 2022". I, René, was taking the photo. Amy and Tracy were in the background. Sandra and Nathan were not present. Dalles and Dad talked and laughed so much. We heard some great memories and caught up on each of our families. The boys stood up when their graduation year was announced. (Willy `49 and Dallas `51)
