Debra Sue Bach, 62, was called to be with God on Aug. 1, 2014, at her home in Bismarck with her loving and caring husband at her side. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, at First Evangelical Free Church, with the Rev. Kevin Lardy officiating. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a prayer service/time of sharing will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Debra was born on Oct. 16, 1951, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the daughter of Norma (Purvis) and Don Carter. She was raised in southeast Colorado where she attended many schools. She graduated from La Junta High School in 1969 and married Joe Horak two weeks thereafter. They had two children, Bryan and Lori. Deb attended Nebraska Western College in Scottsbluff, Neb., in 1978 and 1979 where she was enrolled to become a licensed practical nurse. Her dedication at the college was evident with her being ranked number one in her class on the state board exam. It was during that time she met the love of her life and best friend who she trusted dearly, Jim, who was working for Basin Electric in Scottsbluff.
Deb worked as a nurse for Saint Alexius Medical Center for 18 years and retired in 1998 due to health issues. Her dedication and commitment as a nurse was one of the many ways she fulfilled her desire to take care of others. In addition to providing excellent patient care she was a joy to work alongside. Many of her best friendships were formed during her time at Saint Alexius.
Deb's strong conviction to serve the Lord was evident through her ministries in discipleship counseling. She was very active in Freedom in Christ Ministry, Caring for People God's Way, Evangelism Explosion, and leading many Beth Moore Bible Studies. From the time she was a little girl until her departure she had a deep Christian faith, a kind and giving heart and a beautiful smile. She always knew there was a better place waiting for her and was looking forward to the day of meeting her Lord and Savior.
She had a love for house plants and flowers. Her yard and home were filled with the brilliant colors of life. She loved being with her three grandkids, singing nursery songs and making them her famous Grammy Sammys.
Debra is survived by her husband, Jim, Bismarck; four children, Bryan Horak, La Junta, Colorado, Lori (Matt) Senechal, Springfield, Ill., Joshua (Beth) Bach, Madison, Wis., and Jarrett (Jenna) Bach, Bismarck; three grandchildren, Caleb and Cohen Senechal and Sienna Bach; three brothers, Mike Cornell, Colorado, David Cornell, Kansas, and Greg Carter, Texas; two sisters, Karen Bishop, Colorado, and Terri (Ken) Powell, Texas; one brother-in-law, Bill (Dillys) Bach; and two sisters- in-law, Carla (Bob) Hillard and Karen (Whitey) Holt.
