Delbert W. Schettler, 82, Bismarck, formerly of Halliday, was called home peacefully with his family by his side on Dec. 31, 2011, at St. Alexius Medical Center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. CST Wednesday, Jan. 4, at St. Martin Catholic Church, Hazen, with the Rev. Johnson Kuriappilly officiating. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. CST Tuesday at St. Martin Catholic Church with a vigil service at 7 p.m.
Delbert was born June 8, 1929, in rural Dunn Center, to John W. and Agatha (Darcy) Schettler. He was raised north of Halliday on the family farm and attended Pioneer No. 1 country school and graduated from Halliday High School. Delbert married Katherine "Kay" Wilhelm on Nov. 28, 1950, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Halliday. In April 1951, Delbert was drafted into the U.S. Army until 1953 when he was honorably discharged. When he returned from his time in the service, he farmed and ranched with his parents on the family farm. Delbert and Kay lived on the farm until 1976, when they purchased part of the family farm and relocated to a new house east of the homestead. In the fall of 2010, they moved to Edgewood Vista in Bismarck.
Delbert was a lifetime member of the VFW, Halliday Senior Citizens, St. Paul's Catholic Church and the card club. He greatly enjoyed flying, traveling, which included vacations to Medora and attending the State Fair and going to rodeos. Delbert also loved to play cards and visit with people. He especially loved teasing his family and friends.
Delbert is survived by his wife, Kay, Bismarck; his children, Dennis (Peggy) and Charlotte (Paul) Rohde, both of Halliday, Mary (Gordon) Robson, Hazen, Dave (Rhonda), Bismarck, and Melissa (Mike) Gregoire, Shakopee, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three sisters, Jacky (Don) Sorensen, Halliday, Carole (Louis) Treiber, Independence, Kan., and Marlene (Roger Ives) Dalrymple, Bismarck; one brother, Jerry (Anne), Dickinson; two aunts, Delia Hammel, Bismarck, and Evelyn Darcy, Golden Valley; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Delbert was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Kay Voigt. (Barbot-Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen)
