Esther Lydia Marie was born in Hebron on July 5, 1926 to Fred and Anna (Moos) Veitz and was the oldest with five younger brothers. She was always proud to have two middle names which were from each of her grandmothers. When Esther was five years old, her family moved from Hebron to a farm 14 miles north of New Leipzig. Growing up included much farm work and helping her mother as the family grew. Social life revolved around their country church, Trinity Lutheran (Pastor Rudolph Heupel), where she was confirmed in German on July 13, 1941.
She completed the eighth grade and always wished she could have gone to high school. After turning 21, she worked as a waitress at the New Leipzig Cafe and then later worked at the Home Cafe in Mott. There she met a handsome young farmer, Simon Kuehn, Jr. They were married June 20, 1950.
They farmed together north of Burt until Simon's passing on Sept. 24, 2011. While on the farm, Esther worked side by side with Simon raising crops, cattle, and sheep. She also raised geese, ducks, chickens, turkeys and milked cows for grocery money. She enjoyed gardening, canning, embroidery, growing many house plants and sharing them with others, and pleasing people with a good meal.
Esther is survived by one daughter, ReMae, Mandan; one brother Vernon, Mandan; sisters-in-law, Violet, Bismarck; and Judy Veitz, Hettinger; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Simon; brothers Walter, Clarence, Rudy and Harlan; sisters-in-law Alverna, Ardella, and Jeanette Veitz; and Simon's parents and siblings.
The staff at Elm Crest Manor also became like family. Esther received loving care while she was there in 2015 and again when she entered August of 2018 until her passing. The kindness and helpful attention given to her is very much appreciated.
Memorial gifts will be given to Trinity Lutheran Church of Mott in Esther's memory.
