Gene Werre, 70, Bismarck, died Feb. 16, 2011, at Medcenter One, Bismarck. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 21, at Church of the Ascension, Bismarck, with the Rev. Marvin Klemmer officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a vigil will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Parkway Funeral Service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Gene was born Jan. 10, 1941, in Bismarck, the son of Hayden and Vera (Mathewson) Werre. He grew up in Bismarck and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1959. Gene married Gloria Jeanne Sather in November 1959. Gloria passed away in 1972. Gene married Leona (Wangler) Hulm on Jan. 15, 1982. Through the years, Gene and Leona enjoyed spending time at their lake cabin on Brush Lake.
During his career, Gene worked for Eddy's Bakery, Keebler Company and finally at KFYR Radio, where he retired from after 40 years. Following his retirement, Gene had recently started working as an usher at the Bismarck Civic Center.
Gene enjoyed softball and bowling and was an all-around avid sports fan. He participated in the Bismarck Tournament Committee and was a volunteer during the McQuade Charity Softball Tournament. He was a member of the Bismarck-Mandan Elks and the Brush Lake Cabin Association.
Gene is survived by his wife of 29 years, Leona, Bismarck; his sons, Rae (Dena), Allentown, Pa., Ronn (Pat), Marina Del Rey, Calif., and Jason (Petra) Hulm, Bismarck; two grandchildren, Nikolas Werre and Gabriella Werre, Marina Del Rey, Calif., and another grandchild on the way; his brother, Jack Werre, Bismarck; two nieces, Candace (Mick) Thompson, Harvey, and Kelli Werre (Larry Berger), Bismarck; 14 sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; three "adopted" grandchildren, Kristie, Shane and Cody Ward, Bismarck; 34 nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria; his sister-in-law, Virginia Werre; and his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the McQuade Charity Softball Tournament, PO Box 1196, Bismarck, N.D., 58502.
