George Scherr Obituary

George Scherr

George Scherr, 70, Bismarck, died Sept. 10, 2006, at a Bismarck hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. John Mathai officiating.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck.

George was born Nov. 10, 1935, in Napoleon, the son of Wendelen and Christina (Weigel) Scherr. He was raised and educated in Napoleon, where as a freshman he fell in love with his future bride who was in the seventh grade. One of George's highlights during high school was being captain of the football team. He taught country school for one year in the Napoleon area. George moved to Bismarck and attended Bismarck State College. He then married Lois Brown on Dec. 15, 1956, at St. Mary's Church in Bismarck.

George worked in the plaster and stucco business with his brothers, which he learned from his father. After 40 years, George retired because of complications due to a stroke. George built several beautiful homes, where he and Lois raised their six children. He was very involved with his children. He spent many years as a Boy Scout leader and enjoyed fishing, hunting and attending sporting events.

George was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He will always be remembered for his homemade pickles, chicken soup and hugs and great kisses. He was a member of the Elks, Eagles, Moose and the Knights of Columbus. George was known for his generous donations and especially his time repairing churches and other facilities. George and his family, instead of buying gifts for Christmas, made a child's wish come true through Make-A-Wish Foundation of North Dakota. This contribution brought tremendous joy to a sick child's life and in turn brought joy to George's life.

George is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lois, Bismarck; four sons, Gregory (Pam), Rapid City, S.D., and Brian (Tami), Steven (Kelly) and George Michael (Angie), all of Bismarck; two daughters, Tammy (Kent) Neustel, Mandan, and Gail (Dave) Heil, Bismarck; George's 12 special grandchildren, who he lived his life for, Jayme, Casey, Holly, Cory and Riley Scherr, Brandon (fiancee, Jessie) and Kylie (fiance, Aaron) Neustel, Danielle and Tylor Scherr, Amber (fiance, Iff) and David Heil, and Cole (little buddy) Scherr; two step-grandchildren, Kelly and Madison; two great-granddaughters; six brothers; and six sisters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant twin granddaughters; one sister, Mary; one brother-in-law; and two sisters-in-law.

George's family would like another child's wish to come true. Memorials can be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of North Dakota in George's memory to 1102 43rd St. S. Suite E, Fargo, N.D. 58103.

Lois and Family, It is so hard to express what is really in our hearts. We have known your family for so many years and did so many things together people used to think I was one of the Scherrs. We have so many great memories that they will surely tide us over for the rest of our lives. George is now in God's arms and at peace. We love you all. Remember your friends are only a phone call away.

Lois,

My heart goes out to you. I am going to try and be there, but it may be too much for me right now. However, whatever I do just know you are in my thoughts and prayers. He was such a dear man and I liked nothing better than giving him a bad time!! He will be missed by all who knew him.

Per the family's request, I will be sending a donation to the Make A Wish Foundation which happens to be our favorite charity, too.

God be with you and yours.

Love,

Vivian
