Herbert Mattis Obituary
Herbert Mattis, 77, Bismarck, died Sept. 26, 2008. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Wes Aardahl and Chris Alexander officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Herb was born July 24, 1931, in Adams County, the son of Gottlieb and Rose (Beck) Mattis. He was raised and attended school in Hettinger where he graduated. Herb entered the U.S. Army in 1952, and served in Korea, where he received the Bronze Service Star. Herb married Delores Royset on Sept. 2, 1961, in Moorhead, Minn. They lived in Fargo until 1966 when they moved to Bismarck. Herb farmed near Hettinger with his brother, Oscar, for over 50 years. He also worked as a construction contractor in Bismarck.
Herb was a lifetime member of the VFW, and also belonged to the American Legion, Elks and Moose Club. He was particularly proud of his work with the VFW and serving with the VFW Military Honor Guard. Herb was a man of integrity and principle who had a strong work ethic. He took pride in accomplishing a project and in having a job well done. Herb loved people and took time to visit with folks about their lives. He believed a man's word was worth more than gold.
He is survived by his wife, Delores; his son, Timothy, Moorhead, Minn.; his daughter, DeAnne (Daniel) Berwald, Vadnais Heights, Minn.; his grandchildren, Christopher and Amber Mattis and Kaitlyn and Branden Berwald; his brothers and sister-in-law, Oscar (Bertha) Mattis, Hettinger, and Henry Mattis, Cheyenne, Wyo.; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Lillian (John) Martin, Bismarck, Frieda Solem, Anchorage, Alaska, and Arlene (Brad) Rice, Walla Walla, Wash.; his sisters-in-laws, Edyth Bohjanen, Lino Lakes, Minn., and Doris Mattis, Dickinson; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Delores's family, Ilene (Ray) Anderson, Buffalo, S.D., Gary Royset, Bainbridge Island, Wash., Gayle (Loren) Unruh, Great Bend, Kan., and Karen (Jon) Jennings, Bismarck.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Emil, Arthur and Reinhold Mattis; and two nephews, Gregory and Melvin.
Memorials may be given to the VA Medical Center, attn: Voluntary Service, 2101 Elm St., Fargo, N.D. 58102, or the North Dakota State Veterans Cemetery.

To the Mattis Family:
I was really saddened by the passing of Herb... Such a wonderful man whom I truely adored!
He was a Little Cottage Cafe customer of mine when I worked there many years ago and also running into him weekly at his coffee time at Dan's North when I did my grocery shopping. He was such an inspiration to me and he always had time to say "Hello" and give me one his super smiles. You will be so missed - - I will think of you alot. God Bless You & remember Herb will be smiling down on us ALL!

We have lost another Great American Patriot, Hero, Husband, Father,and our Friend. Men with Herb's character are a blessing to have known in anyone's lifetime. He will be missed greatly as so many great men are. Herb has been an inspiration in our lives and we hope to inspire others with his continued memory.

We were shocked and saddened to hear about Herb. His friendship and counsel were very much appreciated. Please accept our condolences. We will be unable to attend Herb's funeral because of a meeting I have in Kansas City. Herb had a very positive impact on those who were asociated with and knew him. It is people like Herb who make the good things happen in this world. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

We are very sorry for your loss. Although we only met Herb a handful of times, we do know that he was a wonderful, strong man who was respected by all who knew him. We also know that his character will live on in his son, Tim. Tim is a loyal friend and an honest man, and he most certainly obtained those qualities from Herb and Delores.

Herb was a good man. I was shocked to learn of his passing. His work on our house was exceptional and I learned a lot just watching him.
