Jack Fisher

Jack Fisher, 85, passed away on Sept. 16, 2020 at his home. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at Charity Lutheran Church, 120 Aspen Ave, Bismarck. A service livestream will be available for viewing on the church's website.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck.

Burial will be held 12 p.m. Thursday at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Jack was born on April 16, 1935 to Leila M. (Thom) and Roy V. Fisher in Bottineau. He attended schools in Russell, Gardena and graduated from Bottineau High School. He earned a B.A. from Bottineau School of Forestry. Jack was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army from August 1955 to October 1958, spending time in Fort Chaffee, Ark. and Camp Drake, Japan. After his service, Jack earned a B.S. from Valley City State College. While at Valley City, Jack played football and was later inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.

Over the course of the next 35 years, Jack taught physical education and math, holding positions in Erie, Sherwood, Wishek, and Bismarck. While teaching, Jack also coached many sports. Jack led teams to various district and regional championships, including Wishek's 1972 state track championship. Jack retired from Bismarck Public School's Simle Junior High in 2000. In retirement, Jack's love of teaching, coaching and sports continued. He was employed with Bismarck Parks and Rec at the golf dome for 10 years. He also supervised student teachers through the University of Mary. He was very proud to serve as a mentor and coach for several Mandan youth basketball and football teams in recent years. In 2019, Jack was the recipient of the Roger Higgins Award, given by the Bismarck Quarterback Club for dedicated service to athletics in his community.

Jack married Yvonne M. Huber on July 7, 1973. From this union, one son and daughter were born. Jack enjoyed sharing sports with his family, including their attendance at the softball games he pitched, playing golf together and cheering for the Green Bay Packers! Jack also shared his faith with his family. Together they attended Charity Lutheran Church. Daily, Jack shared God's love through his kindness and care of others.

From an early age, Jack's vibrant nature filled those around him with laughter. He had a quick-witted sense of humor and a zest for life. In his later years, Jack was a regular at several coffee groups where he would voice his opinions and share his positive outlook regardless of life's circumstances.

Those thankful to share in his life include his wife of 47 years, Yvonne; daughter, Dana; sisters, Linda Maupin, Denver, Colo., and Deborah Hanson, Minot; brother-in-law Keith (Roz) Huber, Valley City; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Jack was preceded in death by his infant son; parents; brother, Robert; brother-in-law, Peter Hanson; and in-laws, Walt and Ethel Huber.

Memorials in Jack's memory can be made to Carrie's Kids of Bismarck or Charity Lutheran Church Bismarck.

He was hard as nails and we were all drawn to his coaching style. Never sugar coated anything and we will all miss him dearly.

He was my math teacher at Simle and was one of my best teachers. I was an average math student but he inspired me and I came to really enjoy math. So sorry to hear of his passing but what a legacy seeing his accomplishments throughout his years.

Mr. Fisher was my math teacher at Simle many years ago- he was the man that took me from hating math to excelling in it! Cheers to graduating early, finishing my BA and MBA!! He forever has a place in my heart.

Mr. Fisher was my 9th grade Geometry teacher at Simle. He was my favorite teacher from Simle. I remember him encouraging us to use our imagination to look at the world/life from different perspectives.
My deepest sympathy to his wife and Dana who I was friends with.
