Janice Vogel Obituary

Janice Vogel

Janice (Jan), Vogel, 66, of rural Mandan, died Aug. 30, 2005, at home with her family beside her. Services will be held at 10:30 Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan with Fr. Al Leary officiating. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery, Mandan.

Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 2, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan. There will be a Catholic Daughters Rosary at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, followed by a parish vigil at 7 p.m. There will be no visitation at the church.

Jan was born in Mandan, the daughter of Henry and Esther Wolf. She, along with her four brothers, grew up on the family farm north of Judson. On Oct. 10, 1956, Jan married Joseph A. Vogel. They had three children, Esther, Mavis and Joe. While raising a family, she worked to help her husband obtain a college degree, as well as his law degree.

Jan was a State Park auditor for several years before resigning to help her husband start a private law firm. For 26 years, Jan worked side-by-side with her husband, managing the office and performing various paralegal duties. In 1998, after her husband's death, Jan was hired by the Red Cross as a bookkeeper and later as the manager of the Gift Shop.

In her spare time, Jan was an active member of the Jaycees, holding several elected offices. She also organized a health-food coop with local families and was a member in TOPS.

Her strong faith was evident in her involvement at Christ the King Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Catholic Daughters and served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister.

She was an avid gardener and birdwatcher and loved working with crafts. Jan was an extremely talented seamstress and sewed most of her children's clothes as well as her own when her family was young and money was tight.

A recent trip to Cancun with her immediate family offered Jan the opportunity to explore her adventurous nature. While there she went snorkeling and para-sailing.

Jan had a special love for her two grandsons. She had them over for breakfast many mornings and attended various activities that they were involved in. This spring Jan helped Matt plant the first grape vine in his future vineyard. Care packages in the mail were eagerly awaited by Thomas while he attended college.

Jan is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law; Esther Vogel, Mandan, and Mavis (George) Wall, Novato, Calif.; two grandsons, Thomas and Matt Ingalls; three brothers, Daryl (Linda) Wolf, Fridley, Minn.; Don (Georgie) Wolf, Bismarck, and Wilhelm (Maggie) Minneapolis; and one sister-in-law, Ruth Wolf, Annandale, Minn.

Jan was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph A. Jr.; one son, Joseph A. III; her parents; and one brother, Clarence Wolf.

We knew Jan very well and she, as well as Joe, helped us out tremendously in 1994-1995 when we were having some difficult times. We were very shocked to hear and read of her death. God Bless You during this most difficult time.

I was so sorry to hear of the loss of Jan - what a wonderful person. I greatly enjoyed working with her (and Joe) on a professional level as well as a personal level. I was honored by her friendship. I will miss her, but I know she is off to a better place.

My condolences to the family.
