Jay W. Chapman, Sr., 70, 107 12th St. N.W., Mandan, died Dec. 31, 1999 at his home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Calvary Free Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Arthur K. Wetzel officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.
Visitation begins today from 1-9 p.m. and 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Jay Wilbur Chapman Sr. was born Nov. 28, 1929 at Valley City to Jay W. and Freada (Kapaun) Chapman. He was raised and educated in Bismarck, Foley, Minn., Lake City, Minn., and Buffalo, ND. Jay graduated from Buffalo High School, received his BA from Jamestown College and his Masters Degree from the University of North Dakota. Jay served in the US Marines during the Korean Conflict reaching the rank of Corporal from Sept. 5, 1951 to Sept. 4, 1953. He married Elinor V. Berntson on Aug. 25, 1957 at Hastings, ND. Jay had taught school at LaMoure, Cavalier, Mandan Jr. High, the University of Mary, and Shiloh Christian School.
He is survived by his wife, Elinor Chapman; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Stan Kenny, Sterling, Kan., Renee and David Schelkoph, Mason City, Iowa; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jay and Lynelle Chapman Jr., Mandan, and Dave Chapman, Minot; two sisters, Etla Bayley, Buhl, Minn., Louise Decker, Mustang, Okla.; 10 grandchildren, Kristen, Jay IV, Sarah and Jennifer Chapman, Erin, Jared and Ryan Kenny, Daniel, Kate and Mark Schelkoph.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents; one brother and one sister.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Alexius Hospice, Gideon Society or similar charity. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)
