Kathleen "Katy" Zundel, 91, Mandan, passed away November 3, 2025.
Kathleen (Katy) was born in Milbank, SD in 1934 to Isabelle (Murphy) and Hilbert Lowitz. She attended school in Milbank and later Watertown, where she graduated High School in 1953 and married Donald Zundel.
Kathleen was blessed with two sons, Donald Lee Jr. (ReNay) and Robert Murray (Judith). She was an avid fan of their running sports and always made it a priority to cheer them on at their meets.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, ReNay Zundel; two granddaughters, Erica Zundel Hager (Corey) and Caitlyn Zundel Hager (Charles); great-grandchildren: Kya, Gavin, Drew, Brendan, Jobe, Mason, Isaac and Caroline; and daughter-in-law, Judith Madden.
Kathleen loved teaching and taught in Codington County and Redfield SD schools. She enjoyed fishing, hiking, reading, word puzzles, golf, boating, hunting, gardening, knitting and sewing. Kathleen was an active member of P.E.O., Daughters Of The American Revolution and the United Methodist Church. She led aquatics exercises, and loved playing Bridge.
Kathleen and her husband Donald both enjoyed their involvement in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and Kathleen rose to the rank of Rear Commodore. She enjoyed boating patrols, teaching boating safety classes, doing boat inspections, commanding the flotilla in Kalispell Mt., and Captain of Division Thirteen (state of Montana Flotillas). Kathleen and Donald lived in Pensacola, Florida, Watertown SD, Vermillion SD, Fargo ND, Redfield SD, Mandan ND and lastly in Kalispell MT for 41 years. She moved back to Mandan in 2017 to be near family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Zundel Sr.; sons, Robert Zundel and Donald Zundel, Jr.; parents, Hilbert and Isabelle Lowitz; sisters, Evelyn Below and Lenora Parsons; and two nieces, Sarah Parsons and Melanie Parsons Julien.
A graveside service will be held in Kalispell, MT next summer.
