Leo Jans, 77, Velva, entered his heavenly home on Sunday, July 18, 2021, in his home.
He was born March 7, 1944, the son of Emil and Bertha (Manz) Jans, in the Prophet Mountains north of Mercer. He was raised and educated north of Mercer.
Leo enlisted in the United States Army on Aug. 5, 1965. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged May 26, 1967.
He was raised on the family farm and attended school until 10th grade at the Consolidated School north of Mercer. In 1965, he joined the Army and deployed to Vietnam for a 13-month tour during the Vietnam War. He returned home to cattle ranch. In 1972, he was united in marriage to Joyce Jans and they made their home by his family's farm and had two children, Tracy and Troy. Leo was a fur trapper/skinner and had a scrap-iron business. In 1980, Leo and his family moved to Butte and was employed by Butte Public School as a bus driver for 25 years and he also worked for Bauer Farms for 30 years. He also worked at Cenex Harvest States for 1.5 years. Leo remarried in 1991 to Pam (Brown) Randall and enjoyed being a father to his stepson David and stepdaughter, Christie. In 2008, Leo moved his house from Butte and settled north of Velva on land he purchased for his retirement, allowing him to enjoy his family and watch his grandchildren grow up.
He was a member of the Velva American Legion Post #39, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, Oak Valley Lutheran Church and Velva Senior Citizens.
Leo was the center of the family. He had an incredibly good sense of humor, enjoyed visiting with everyone around him and was a kind and caring person who had a positive outlook on life. He enjoyed hunting, working on projects and spending time with family.
His loving family includes: daughter, Tracy (John) Ulland; son, Troy (Jans) Coleman; grandchildren, Eric and Emily Ulland; brother, Larry Jans; sisters, Ella Peterson, Violet Jans, Linda (Harley) Murray; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Bertha Jans; his sisters, Clara, Stella, Grace, and Rose; his brother, Alvin; and his daughter, Stella.
Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 27 at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, 400 Main St. N., Velva, with a Video Tribute to Leo being played from 10:00 to 10:45 am.
Visitation: There will be no reviewal, but friends may sign the register book on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to service time at the church.
Interment: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Our Savior Lutheran Cemetery, Mercer.
Memorials are preferred to Oak Valley Lutheran Church.
