Mary McCann
MANDAN - Mary McCann, 65, of Mandan, passed away April 5, 2023, at Sunset Drive - A Prospera Community, Mandan. Mary Louise McCann was born in Mandan, ND, on December 21, 1957, to Joseph and Joan (Hartley) McCann. Shortly after Mary's birth the family relocated to Mandan from Underwood. Mary attended school in Mandan and graduated from the special education program at Mandan High School. Mary often walked six blocks from home on 6th Ave. to her grandparent's home on 9th St. to play cards with her grandmother and younger sister. She developed and uncanny ability for card games, winning far more often than her unsuspecting opponents.
Following the divorce of Mary's parents, she lived in various group homes. All of her caregivers loved her as she had a sweet, loving disposition and was extremely empathetic towards everyone. Mary loved to give hugs! She worked for Pride Inc. for many years as the cashier in their lunchroom, as well as other assigned work. She loved working as she felt a need to contribute.
Mary is survived by her oldest sister, Bridget McCann of Westmont, IL; younger sister, Cynthia (Scott) Burrell of Renville, MN; and younger brother, Joseph McCann also of Westmont, IL.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, E. Joseph McCann and Joan (Hartley, McCann) Anderson; grandparents, Grant and Ruth Hartley; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family would like to thank Mary's team at Sunset Drive, as well as all those who worked with her throughout the years for providing her such wonderful care. She will be deeply missed.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Mary's name to Pride Inc. in Bismarck or Catholic Charities North Dakota. Mary will be laid to rest with her father at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery and a Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date and notification will be posted when that is scheduled.
