Matthew Mechtel

PAGE - Matthew Mechtel, 39, Page, died Feb. 21, 2008, on the family farm near Page. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at Fargo Baptist Church, 3303 23rd Ave. S. Burial will be in Page Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday with prayer services at 5 p.m. at West Funeral Home, West Fargo, Sheyenne Street and Fourth Avenue, and one hour before services.

Matthew Alan Mechtel was born Nov. 19, 1968, in Fargo. He grew up on the family farm near Page and graduated from Page High School. Matt was involved in a successful family farm operation and was actively involved in many organizations and activities.

Matt was involved with numerous farm organizations and excelled as a leader. Matt served on the board of directors for N.D. Soybean Council and Northern Crops Council for several years and was an active member of Cass County Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers. In 1997, Matt was awarded the Dupont ASA Young Leader award, and in 1999 he was named N.D. Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer and was honored as National Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer in 2000. He was also awarded N.D. Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Award. In 2006, Matt's zest for politics blossomed and he was nominated as the Republican candidate for U.S. House of Representatives. Matt was an avid outdoorsman and was very passionate about hunting. He was a lifetime member of Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Matt will be remembered for his charismatic personality, broad smile and generous nature. Matt left a lasting impression on all who met him and he shared his gifts of intelligence, humor and wit with many. He will be greatly missed but those who were fortunate enough to be part of his life will carry his spirit with them forever.

He is survived by his parents, Marvin and Georgie, Page; two sisters, Mindy (Wylie) Wetzel, Woodbury, Minn., and Melissa (Cory) Rogne, Fargo; and two nieces, Katherine and Margaret Wetzel.
