Melvin Doerr, 74, Bismarck, died Nov. 24, 2008, at his home. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.

Melvin was born April 24, 1934, in Alberta, Canada, the son of August H. and Rosina (Hausauer) Doerr. He moved with his family to North Dakota as a boy and lived in McClusky and Bismarck. Melvin attended Bismarck schools. He joined the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1956. Melvin married Berneice Thorp on April 15, 1958, in Bismarck, at Trinity Lutheran Church.

He worked as a stock clerk for Capital Drug and for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier where he retired from in 1989. He was active in the National Association of Letter Carriers. After retiring, Melvin's passion became golfing. He spent many years working as a ranger at all the Bismarck-Mandan courses. He loved playing cards and bowling and loved working with his hands.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Berneice; his children, Clayton (Margit) Frankfurt, Germany, Jason (Jeanine), Bismarck, Quentin, Radford, Va., and Christine (Brian) Wood, Athens, Ga.; and his grandchildren, Justin and Daniel Doerr, Andrew Dockter, Courtney McCormick and Hayden Wood. He is also survived by three sisters and three brothers.

He was preceded in death by his son, Brian; his parents; one sister; and four brothers.
