DICKINSON - Philomena "Minnie" Roller, 94, passed away April 28, 2016, at St. Benedict's Health Center, Dickinson. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. MDT today, May 3, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with the Rev. Todd Kreitinger celebrating. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dickinson.
Philomena "Minnie" Binstock was born June 14, 1921, to Frank and Rose (Faiman) Binstock on the family farm east of New Hradec in Dunn County. Her grandmother, Helen (Hoerner) Faiman, was the midwife for the delivery. Minnie was the fifth of 10 children born to Frank and Rose. Minnie attended school through grade 8 in New Hradec and spoke three languages: English, German and Bohemian.
Minnie met Lawrence Roller from Sheffield and they were married on Nov. 24, 1942, in a double wedding, as Lawrence's cousin, Ralph Roller, married Minnie's sister, Helen, on that same day. Minnie and Lawrence farmed 10 miles south of Belfield until late 1945, when they moved to Dickinson. Minnie lived in Dickinson for the rest of her life. She was an excellent homemaker and always had time and treats for her five sons and anyone else who came by.
One thing Minnie enjoyed was making comments that surprised and delighted the people and relatives that she encountered. When asked a few years ago how she was feeling, she stated, "I feel so wonderful I'm thinking of running for president." It got the chortles that most rewarded her. This is the personality that we will all miss.
Minnie is survived by three sons, Marvin D., Glasgow, Mont., Vernon J. (Bernadette), Bismarck, and Larry W. (Coleen), Moorhead, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Sean Roller and Jamie Roller, Bismarck, Dana (Heather) Roller, Lincoln, Neb., Christopher Roller, Moorhead, Minn., William Roller, Minneapolis, Andrew (Melissa) Roller, Plymouth, Minn., Benjamin Roller (Alexa Unruh), Zurich, Switzerland, Celecia Roller, Dickinson, and Caylla (Ben Hegstad), Ishpeming, Mich.; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Veronica Billman, Billings, Mont.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, on Nov. 5, 1963; two sons, Patrick and Bernard Roller; her parents; Frank and Rose Binstock; one granddaughter, Nicole Roller; two brothers, Albert and Anton; infant brother, Edward; and five sisters, Anna Bren, Helen Roller, Christine Wanner, Justine Wanner and Rose Stockert.
Minnie's Catholic faith was who she was: faithful, caring, kind, loyal, humble, hardworking and always looking after those she loved.
