William (Bill) Henry Westmeyer, 62, Mandan, died Aug. 13, 2010, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck, following a battle with cancer for several months. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. David Hein officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan, with military services provided by the Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Posts.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Buehler-Larson Funeral Home in Mandan and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Bill was born Sept. 18, 1947, at New Salem, the son of Carl and Ella (Joersz) Westmeyer. Raised in Mandan, Bill graduated from Mandan High School in 1966. He then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps that same year and served 11 years active duty including two tours of duty in Vietnam. Bill continued his military service with the North Dakota National Guard retiring in 2007.
Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps, Bill returned to Mandan. He worked at Mandan Sanitation for 20 years and at Cloverdale Foods Company the last 12 years. He retired from Cloverdale in September of 2009.
Bill was a man of the outdoors who loved to hunt and fish. He was a faithful Green Bay Packer, LA Dodgers and LA Lakers fan. He also enjoyed bowling. Family members and close friends were most important to him. They were often his companions on hunting and fishing trips. Bill was easy to get along with and loved to visit with whomever he met.
He will be dearly missed by those who survive him, including his sisters, Eileen Solberg, Mandan, Bernice Peterson, Columbia Heights, Minn., Florence Beard, Fenton, Mich., and Stella Westmeyer, Mandan; his brothers, Harold (Viola) Westmeyer, Mandan, and Ray (Connie) Westmeyer, Minot; 22 nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews; and his canine friend, Jackal.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Dorothy Bettencourt and Lorraine Westmeyer.
