Sarah Smith Obituary

Sarah Kate McDaniel Smith passed away peacefully on April 14, 2021.

Sarah Kate Smith was born in Dublin on October 6, 1942 to her parents, Lawrence and Mary McDaniel, who predeceased her.

She was also predeceased by two brothers, Stewart and James McDaniel and her Aunt Sadie and Uncle R.H. Sutton, who were a source of love and support in her life.

Survivors include Sarah Kate's children, daughter Rachel Kay Smith and wife Sharon Harmon, daughter Sonya Jean Smith, and son Larry James Smith Jr. and wife Tammy Smith and their children Zachary Taylor Smith and Cameron James Smith. Sarah Kate is also survived by her beloved sister and constant companion, Faith McDaniel Thomas, and her brothers Grady Wayne, David and Michael McDaniel. A very special thanks to her sister Faith, niece Lisa, nephew Robert and wife Charlene, who were a great source of love and comfort to Sarah Kate.

Sarah Kate enjoyed cooking, listening to music, reading, sharing with her sister and her friends. The beach was among her favorite places to be. She lived for a time in St. Augustine, Florida, Myrtle Beach and Charleston, South Carolina, where she had great friends like Jean Graham and Sonya Cox. Sarah Kate enjoyed people and worked with the public as a property manager at Wild Dunes Resort and Social Services and finally, at Bladen County Hospital. Sarah Kate enjoyed traveling to Colorado, to the North Carolina mountains and many other parts of the country. Other pastimes included refinishing furniture, planting and gardening. She loved springtime when the flowers and trees bloom and the birds fill the air with song. Sarah Kate was renowned for her amazing Christmas displays and loved the holidays, where she spent many happy days baking and singing with her daughters and family members.

Sarah Kate was a loving, caring and generous person who is loved and deeply missed by her family and friends alike. She would want to say a special thank you to Tiffany and Brittany at First Bank and her friend and personal care professional, Michael, whom she adores. Thank you for your kindness and taking great care of her. Also, a special thank you to the staff and CNAs of Bladen East Health and Rehabilitation assisted living facility for the care they provided to Sarah Kate and the kindness they showed her family during these past few weeks. She appreciated you very much, as does the family.

There will be a private service for family members. In lieu of flowers the family requests that charitable donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to a charity of your choice in her memory.

Time will never erase my memories of such a wonderful person - my aunt. She was always so cheerful when I visited. Her deer hash was right up there with chocolate. And anyone who knows me knows how much I love chocolate

Sarah Kate was beautiful inside and out. She was my aunt, my friend and my prayer warrior. I miss her so very much.

This is a picture of Aunt Sarah Kate and Aunt Sadie. I believe this was taken at a Gillespie reunion but don’t know when.
