William Michael (Bill) Brown left us peacefully, on May 17, 2025, surrounded by loved ones, after a long battle with cardiovascular disease. Born October 21, 1969, and raised in Worcester, Mass., he graduated from Ithaca College and spent a long, colorful stretch of life in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I., as city editor of The Virgin Islands Daily News before eventually settling in Concord, N.H.
Bill first came to Block Island as a young boy in the 1970s, spending summers working and exploring the beauty of the island. For those lucky enough to cross paths with him, whether working alongside him at the National, the Atlantic Inn, the Manisses, Harborside, or Surf Hotel, hanging out at the beach, dancing at Nick's, singing along with Walter, drinking mudslides at the Oar, or sharing a laugh in town, it's hard to think of Block Island without thinking of Bill.
He was a die-hard fan of the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, and every good dog he ever met. But more than anything, Bill loved people. He thrived on connecting with his friends, greeting each with a warm hug and big smile, solving the world's problems during late night conversations that lasted well into the early morning, and get-togethers big and small. His Fourth of July cookouts were the stuff of legend: Bill at the grill, calling each firework by an absurd name with ridiculous enthusiasm from his cherished family house on Beacon Hill.
It was on The Hill that Bill was his happiest. He loved to share the property's storied history and the stunning views. The Hill truly was his happy place, providing a place to entertain, party, and enjoy friends and family. When he met Carrie, the love of his life, sharing Beacon Hill, the island, and his friends with her brought him incredible joy.
Lifelong friends and family described Bill as fearless and confident, bold, brash, and always an adventure waiting to happen. Others remember Bill as the ringleader, hosting many lively events and getting into all kinds of island shenanigans. He was quick-witted, loved a good debate, and spoke with the kind of conviction that made you want to keep talking, and even if you disagreed with him, you always respected his passion!
He leaves behind a hole in the hearts of so many who loved him including his devoted wife, Carrie Stengel; his mom Carol; brothers and original partners-in-crime, George (Mary) and Andy; and his niece Emily and nephew Devin, all of whom he was exceptionally proud. He was pre-deceased by his father, George W. Brown.
Please join us on October 11 at 1 p.m. for a graveside service at the Island Cemetery. Reception to follow. In Bill's honor, and in lieu of flowers, please consider donating to
