David Holz Obituary

David Lee Holz, a Lt. Colonel and Salvation Army Officer for over 65 years, was "Promoted to Glory" January 16, 2017 following a long illness. Lt. Colonel David Holz is preceded in death by his parents, Brigadiers Ernest Richard and Keitha White Holz; six siblings; and a firstborn son, David Leon Holz.
Colonel Holz, a native of Oklahoma City, OK, was educated in the public schools of Atlanta, GA and Coral Gables, FL. His formal education was conducted at the University of Miami and The Salvation Army College for Officer Training. He attended The Salvation Army International College for Officers in 1970.
Commissioned as a Salvation Army Officer in 1951, he held two appointments prior to his marriage to Emeline (nee Snyder) in 1954. Together, they commanded three corps, served as Divisional Staff Officers in four divisions and as Divisional Commanders for a total of fifteen years in three divisions.
Upon retirement in 1996, Colonel Holz continued to work in Community Relations and Fundraising for The Salvation Army of Hendersonville. He and Emeline were active volunteers for nearly twenty years with The Cove at the Billy Graham Training Center as well as in local Salvation Army ministries.
Colonel Holz has been active in local civic organizations, including 55 years as a Rotarian. He was nominated and received honorary Paul Harris awards from the Rotary on three occasions.
The Colonel, himself, was a force. The way he always stood tall with commanding presence; his unfailing courtesy in his interactions with comrades of all ranks from the outcasts of society to military generals; his soft musical toned-voice; and constant kindness of manner, are perhaps the things for which he will be best remembered.
His life truly reflected his love for the Lord Jesus Christ, love of family, and love for those he served.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Emeline Snyder Holz; his youngest sibling, Edwy White Holz; three children, Keith (Sabine) Holz, Karen Kinlaw, and Sharon (Richard) Ellison; five grand children, Christina (Gabe) Hollingsworth, Heather (Sean) Carr, Kathryn (Matthew) Nudi, Timothy Kinlaw, and Raffael Holz Eckmann; and great granddaughter, Madison Grace Carr.
The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 21 at Fletcher Adventist Church located at 1141 Howard Gap Rd Hendersonville; Committal Service will follow at the nearby Shepherd Memorial Park loc. at 5045 Asheville Hwy Hendersonville.
Visitation will be this evening, Friday, January 20 from 4-5 pm at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Home located at 125 S. Church St Hendersonville.
An online register book is available for family and friends by visiting www.thosshepherd.com. Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors are in charge of the arrangements.

Dear Mrs. Holz, Thinking of you and your family as you are reminded of the passing of your dear husband. Heaven sure became a brighter place as Lt. Col. Holz entered heaven. He was bigger than life to all of us young people at the Charleston, S. C. Corp because you and Lt. Col. Holz gave so much of yourselves for us. I pray you are well. I know you have wonderful memories of this great man. God bless you and your family.

Lt. Col. Holz touched my life as a young child in the Charleston, S. C. Salvation Army Corp. He and Mrs. Holz gave so much of their time and love to us, that we wanted to choose to do right. Not only did we hear Lt. Col. Holz tell us about living for God, we learned by watching him live what he taught us. He inspired so many of us to live clean lives and do something for God. Lt. Col. Holz was a great man and I feel honored and blessed to have known him. My love and prayers go to Mrs. Holz and family.
