Denver F. Wehmeyer, 91, of Eldon, passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at St. Mary Health Center, Jefferson City.
He was born on February 20, 1921 in New Franklin, MO., the son of the late Gustave Daniel and Lydia A. (Halstenberg) Wehmeyer. He was predeceased by five brothers and five sisters.
He was married to Johnnie Mae (Smith) Wehmeyer on October 5, 1946 in New Franklin. Johnnie who passed away April 13, 2004.
Denver served in the United States Army during WW II as a sergeant in the 6th Armored Division. As a combat veteran, he participated in campaigns in Normandy, Southern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He also received the Bronze Star citation for action at The Battle of the Bulge.
After his tour of duty with the Army, he went to work in November of 1945 for Southwestern Bell, and became a construction foreman for them. He retired from the phone company in 1986.
He was a member of the Eldon United Methodist Church and Cooper Masonic Lodge #36, of Boonville.
Survivors include two daughters; Carol Hodges, and husband Bill of Eldon, MO., Toni Schroeter, and husband Tom of Tuscumbia, MO.; a son, Bill Wehmeyer and his wife, Barbara of California, MO.; four grandchildren, Eric Hodges and wife Tricia Manteca, CA., Terri Hodges of San Jose, CA., Andy Wehmeyer and wife, Anne of Zimmermann, MN., Heather Russell of New Bloomfield, MO., six great-grandchildren; Spencer Hodges, Dylan Hodges, Kaitlyn Wehmeyer, Addison Wehmeyer, Logan Wehmeyer, Kylee Russell, Sister-in-law; Willa Mae Smith of Sturgeon, MO and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Friday, March 2, 2012 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM at the Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon, MO with a Masonic service at 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home, with Reverend Michael Keith officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Eldon City Cemetery, Eldon, MO.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Eldon United Methodist Church, 600 North Oak Street, Eldon, MO 65026 in his memory.
