Albert BOTHE Obituary

BOTHE, Dr. Albert E. Jr. Age 78, of Lewisburg, PA, passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. He was surrounded by the love of his family and friends. Born in Somerville, MA, on July 14, 1946, he was the eldest son of Albert E., Sr. and Ethel (Barker) Bothe.

Al was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and he earned his BMS degree at Dartmouth Medical College and his Doctor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He served as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy in Annapolis, MD, during the Vietnam War. After completing his Surgical Residency at Boston Medical Center, he devoted his career to his tenure at Harvard Medical School/Deaconess Hospital, University of Chicago and finally, Geisinger Medical Center, where he worked with clarity and diligence until retirement. During his over five decades of commitment as a medical clinician and administrator, Al simultaneously completed a Master of Medical Management from Tulane University and served on various national medical boards, committees and organizations to support the advancement of the field. He was an academic, a surgeon, a teacher, a mentor, a hospital and healthcare systems mastermind: he was a doctor's doctor.

Al was a proud and loyal father to his three children, whom he raised in the Boston area and to his five grandchildren as well. Alongside his partner, Jackie, of 31 years, Al was an international traveler, an avid reader of books, a lover of music, including the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, a history buff, a hiker and a keen fan of Boston sports teams and Bucknell basketball. Al, beyond all else, was a rigorous lifelong learner.

Al is survived by his devoted partner, Jacquelyn Paul of Lewisburg, PA; three daughters, Sarah Bothe of Mill Valley, CA, Susannah Bothe and son-in-law, Robert Rogers of Salem, MA and Kate Bothe and son-in-law, Eamon Brown of Providence, RI; five grandchildren, August Brown, Finley Rogers, Tate Rogers, Harriet Brown and Oliver Bothe; and three sisters, Jan Rose of Bluffton, SC, Diane Shanahan of Andover, MA and Carol Porter and brother-in-law, Robert Porter of Brewster, MA.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Mifflinburg, PA, on Sunday, August 10, from 2 - 5 PM, at the Rusty Rail Brewing Company. Kindly RSVP by July 20, 2025: [email protected]. Donations in Al's name may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, www.lbda.org

Arrangements are under the care of the Shaw Funeral Home, 400 N. Front St., MILTON, PA. Condolences may be shared, at www.shawfuneralhomeinc.com

Condolences to Jackie and to Al's family. We will always remember Al as a guy who was always fixing things. We remember his curiosity for all things. We will remember how much he loved and admired Jackie too. We will remember his hospitality when we visited them in Arizona; and what a great conversationalist he was. We can see him jogging up there in Heaven and asking God a bunch of questions.

I worked with Dr. Bothe at Univ of Chicago. I learned so much from him and appreciated his insight and guidance. When he spoke with you he was very engaged and interested regardless of topic. A great man that I respected very much. Rest in peace.

Al was a truly magnificent human being who always did the right thing. It was an honor to have worked with him closely at Geisinger. He and Jackie were the consummate couple - thoughtful, loving and full of life. I will miss him.

Al was a close and dear friend. a master clinician, a superb mentor for surgical trainees, and a extremely dedicated physician in providing care to his patients during our shared early years at the New England Deaconess Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. His administrative skills were critical to the Department of Surgery at the BIDMC and his long association with ASPEN that extended long beyond his Presidency and to his later career at the University of Chicago and Geisinger Medical Center which were exemplary. He was a good man and will be missed.
