Fred is an important factor for what I am as a biotech researcher in my life. Fred was a creative, innovative, and daring scientist. Being very close to him as the only graduate student in the period 1974-76, I was deeply influenced and motivated by him, not necessarily by his technical skills, but by his unleashed spirit and ambition to discover something important. Dear Joan, maybe you don´t remember us, but you and Fred opened your house to a post doc and his intern wife. You were overly generous to allow us to park our Hertz truck in your driveway and put us up for a few weeks while we apartment searched. You cooked lovely meals and Fred played beautiful music on your piano. Kelvin and Fred shared many years of scientific discovery and I remember your generosity. He will be sorely missed. Joanna and Kelvin Davies God bless! .

When I was looking for a postdoc I had only one offer - from Fred. I simply do not know where I would have been professionally and personally (he connected me with my future wife when I was in the lab) without being in Fred's lab.
Dear Joan, Julie, and Aaron:
Please accept my deepest and sincerest condolence. We will all miss Fred.
P.S. The picture was taken during Fred visit to Auburn in November 2019.

Dear Joan,
Please accept my sincerest condolences. Though I'm not very good at keeping in touch, you and Fred have been in my thoughts often and will never leave me. Fred was so special and taught me far more than I taught him.

Fred was inspiring because of his scholarly achievements and benevolence. From tennis court to lab neighbor at HMS, he was a friend and mentor. Wonderfully kind, even offering the services of Aaron to babysit my toddler daughter, he will be missed. Condolences to Joan, Aaron and Julie. Mark Mercola

Dear Joan:
Roz and I were saddened to learn yesterday of Fred´s passing. With moving from Longwood Ave and COVID, we were unaware that his illness had progressed. Words aren´t adequate to describe how wonderful Fred was and the loss everyone feels. We will always remember his joy at the annual Chanukah parties. Our thoughts are with you.

Fred had a huge impact on my career as he did for so many of his other trainees. His broad interests stimulated us to be ever more curious about the intricacies of biology. His critical thinking further sharpened our own analytical skills. His ongoing interest in how our careers evolved and what we were studying exemplified the sense of a global scientific family that cuts across geography and cultures. Rest in peace. Sincere condolences to Joan, Aaron and Julie and the extended family.

As one of Fred's myriad trainees, I'm eternally grateful for the rigor of thought which taught us by example. He became a loyal friend. I was so happy that he retained his keen intellect until the end. While hospitalized recently for advanced treatments his enthusiasm for science didn't ebb. His eyes lit up when speaking about finishing papers and describing his latest discoveries.

I was Fred´s 2nd Ph.D. student working in his lab in 1973-77. I was very fortunate to receive Fred´s close attention and to work close to him. I was deeply inspired by his originality and creativity and the strong drive to do something important that nobody else had done. This early exposure to Fred as a mentor helped me as an inventive researcher in my biotech career. Heartfelt thanks to Joan and Fred for their kindness to me and my family over the decades. I will forever remember Fred.

Fred was a giant in the scientific community and an unmatched scholar. He leaves behind a gap that can never be filled. I first met Fred when I was a young student at Harvard Medical School and wanted to discuss with him a commentary about weight loss and wasting. Just on these 2 words, anorexia vs cachexia, Fred gave a 45-minute-long, spontaneous and startling instruction. I now see this as one of the most important lessons I learned about scholarship, the importance of being accurate and dangers of shallow knowledge. The following 30 years of my academic career, I have had many interactions with Fred and admired his never ending vigor in pursuing truth and passion about science. I will miss him, we will all miss him. May he rest in peace. My condolences to his friends and family.
