Alvan Tucker Obituary

TUCKER, Alvan H. Of Chestnut Hill and Brewster, on November 3, 2011, at the age of 84. Al was born in Boston, the second son of Joseph and Minnie Tucker. He was a 1944 graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover. He was a corporal in the US Army from 1946 to 1947 and returned to graduate from Yale University in 1948 and Columbia Business School in 1951. Al and his older brother, the late Leonard Tucker, took over running their father's company, Tucker Concrete Form, Co. in 1965. Together they were responsible for a variety of structures across the greater Boston area, from Harvard University to the Longwood Medical Area. They contributed to some of Boston's landmark buildings, such as Boston City Hall and structures around Faneuil Hall and Logan airport. Al was president of the Building Trade Employers' Association of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts, president of the Recuperative Center, and a long-serving member of the Building Committee at Beth Israel Hospital. He was known for his warmth, gentleness, and generosity. Al was an avid squash player and a champion tournament backgammon player. He enjoyed sailing, traveling, and the beach and took great pleasure in entertaining, classical music, and collecting contemporary art. Of all his loves, the greatest were his wife, Judith (Rubin) and children, Lindsey, Andrew and Colby Tucker. Dear Judy, Colby, Lindsey, and Andrew,

I remember the first time I met Al, when Charley and Colby were in Kindergarten together. It was at Colby's 6th birthday party, held at your house. Al was videotaping! I had met Judy and Colby only about 7 weeks earlier at Fessenden, now 19 years ago. Colby and Charley had become fast friends and Al aways amazed me about his enthusiasm for even the smallest things. Lindsey and Andrew were much older than Colby at that point and he already had the experience of parenting older children. I remember him saying, "Keep that little one close to you and enjoy him because it passes all too quickly." I can now say, that everything passes all too quickly.

Keep all of the good times close to your heart (and there are many for all of you); a house filled with people and laughter for any and every occasion, fabulous trips to places I have yet to see, wonderful relatives and friends and family that care about each other. My own Dad passed away when he was only 53, so we were young, but because of him and the the role model he was to us for the short time we had him, we have tried to model our own lives in a way that would make him proud. All of you are on the way to creating successful lives of your own.

Judy, you have all of your friends and your children that care about you and love you; and want to help you through this difficult time. You did everything a wife could do to keep Al happy and comfortable until the end. You won't be alone.

Our deepest sympathy,

Judy, Fred, and Charley Zodda

Our sincerest condolences. We have such fond memories of Al as a loving father and generous host as our families shared their nursery school years and later, afternoons on the soccer fields. His wonderful presence will not pass. Fondly, Barbara and Bradley MacDonald
