ANDREW TAGER Obituary

TAGER, Dr. Andrew M. Passed away on August 11 surrounded by family and friends. He was the beloved husband of Carolyn Ho, devoted father of Sam, beloved son-in law of Nancy and Chien Ho, cherished brother and cousin to Michael Tager, David and Lisa Tager, Geoffrey Tager, Edward Blackman and Annette Rockwell, Allen and Clara Beshoar Blackman, Susan and Gary Bank, Amy Kantor, and beloved nephew of Anne Kantor and brother-in-law of Jeanette Ho. He is also survived by many loving nephews and nieces. Born February 25, 1959 in Ann Arbor Michigan, and raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, he attended Brown University (1981) and Harvard Medical School (1988), graduating from both institutions magna cum laude. After oncology and pulmonary fellowships, he held a number of positions, including as Associate Physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, and Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Fibrosis Research Center. In 2012, he received the Marvin I. Swartz Research Award in Pulmonary Fibrosis in recognition of leadership in the efforts to find a cure for pulmonary fibrosis and, in 2017, he received the Recognition Award for Scientific Accomplishments from the American Thoracic Society for outstanding scientific contributions in basic or clinical research to the understanding, prevention, and treatment of respiratory disease or critical illness. Aside from his from his professional accomplishments, he is remembered for his loving kindness to others. Whether mentoring the members of his research lab, taking his son Sam on "T adventures" across the MBTA system, or taking care of friends and family members when they had problems, he always extended himself to help others. He resolved the ailments of family and friends when other doctors couldn't do so, even moving family members in with him to ensure they got treated right. Rather than simply respond to someone with a "yes," he often enthusiastically would say "perfect!" or "beautiful!" while making an expressive hand gesture. He had a diverse range of interests including literature, philosophy, public policy, sports, and popular culture. His high spirited son Sam especially filled him with joy in recent years. He bore his illness with incredible bravery and fortitude, interested in the welfare of others, particularly his wife and son, until the end. His loving kindness to others came back to him in the final weeks of his illness from pancreatic cancer, as the many friends and family members from different phases of his life came to visit him and say their goodbyes. He is so deeply missed. The funeral is at Gutterman-Musicant in HACKENSACK, NJ at 402 Park St. on Tuesday, August 15 at 11 am, with burial at Wellwood Cemetery in Pinelawn, NY following. There will be a memorial service in Boston for him at a later date. Donations can be made to the MGH Fibrosis Research Center in his memory.

It saddened me to learn of Dr. Tager death today while I was writing an email to him. He was a great mentor and kind man who gave me an opportunity to collaborate with his lab since summer 2013. He always was kind, supportive, and positive during my work with his lab.

My prayers are with you and with his family at this time.

Dr. Tager was kind enough to allow me, a high school student at the time, to come and intern at his world-class lab. The experience made me a better scientist and person. Every encounter I had with him brightened my day and increased the respect I have for this amazing man.

What a devastating loss for your family, for MGH, for pulmonary medicine and research, and for the world. Andy was genuinely one of the kindest souls I have ever had the privilege of knowing. I worked with him as a clinical and later research fellow. I will never forget the kindest thing anyone ever did for me in 4 years at MGH: When my wife and I found out we were having a baby and went for the ultrasound to find out the sex, I was on the pulmonary consult service at MGH and Andy was my attending. I came in the morning after the ultrasound to find Andy with a beaming smile and eager to know what we had found out, eager to share in our joy and excitement. Not only was his emotion appreciated, but he went so far as to buy bagels and juice and to make a festive event of it. Truly, the definition of a mensch. He will be missed by me and so many others, and I am lucky to have known him.

So sad to hear this. I was a high school classmate of Andy's and we played soccer together in the town league. We hadn't seen each other in decades, not since college.

There were a lot of very gifted people in Tenafly High School, but few of any of them were as kind and self-effacing as Andy. We always knew he would be a success, but also that he'd remain a "Mensch".

All best wishes at this sad time.

Andy was one of the most impressive people I have ever met. He had a circle of happiness and optimism that surrounded him and everything he did. Andy's scientific work will go on as his lab seeks to continue his ideas and build on his findings and publications. The PF world is forever changed, and patients' lives will be someday improved because of his efforts.

He was a rarity in this world with his joy for life and his love of his family (talking frequently about Sammy and Carolyn). My little girl, Emerson, is six months younger than Sam and we often talked about taking them both to ATS school (childcare onsite) to finally introduce them. I know he must embody much of the same love for life and curiosity that made Andy so incredibly special.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Carolyn and Sam as they go through these incredibly difficult days, weeks and months.

We are all better for having been touched by Andy's happiness, generosity, positivity and love and we are grateful for his influence in our lives.

Dear Carolyn,

I am very sorry to hear that Andy passed away. I saw him at the ATS meeting this year, had a very nice chat with him and prayed for him. Hopefully, I can pay my respects to Andy at his memorial in Boston.

Dear Carolyn and Sam and family, I haven't seen Andy since Brown. Nevertheless, hearing of his death shocked me. Such was the vibrancy of his goodness. He was one of the most genuinely loving people I have ever met. He was the real deal. We only knew each other through an extended friend group and yet I am tearing up hearing this news. I wish you the consolation that comes with knowing just how many people loved him and felt his loving presence, and the space for all of your feelings, and comfort through them. May you feel surrounded by love as you face this terrible loss. Thinking of you, Sue Fendrick (Newton, MA) [email protected]
