''Uncle Ahtha'' and, inseparably, Auntie Do, have been part of my life for as long as I have memory. As a kid, I loved hearing Roslyn and Walter's stories about the fortunate confluence of the two couples in the improbable venue of Joplin, Mo. As I got older, the photographic evidence of the group's weekend revels - more accurately, the morning-after results - never failed to amuse me. That shared moment, in a time fraught with peril, cemented a friendship that not only lasted all of my parents' lifetimes, but bonded two families for another generation.
Doris, Jon, Margie - you have lost a kind, wise and witty husband and father. I will never forget his patient, understanding phone calls to Dad at the end of his life, when Walter made sense only intermittently. It mattered not to Arthur who, as a loyal friend, understood that what really mattered was just being there.
As you navigate this new world, sadly bereft of his presence, I can only hope that his great love for his family - his integrity, good humor and solid dependability - keep you focused on the good times with this lovely man. I, too, will miss him.
