HUGUS, Barbara Hendrick (Sanford) Cancer Researcher and Devoted Mother Barbara Hugus of Aptos, CA, formerly of Wellesley, passed away peacefully on September 18. Born Barbara Joan Hendrick on October 17, 1927 in Brockton, to Arthur and Grace (Brennan) Hendrick, she graduated magna cum laude from Boston University in 1949, and received a Ph.D. in biology in 1963 from Brown University. Barbara pursued her graduate studies while raising four children, and had an active career in the field of tumor immunogenetics. She worked as a researcher and a director at Massachusetts General Hospital, the National Institutes of Health, Harvard Medical School, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and the Jackson Laboratory. In addition to publishing numerous papers on cancer research, Barbara was well-known for mentoring younger scientists, particularly other women. Despite her impressive professional accomplishments, Barbara's family ties were her most treasured. As a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was always willing to offer advice, help with schoolwork, or simply listen. Barbara kept in close contact with all of her descendants and was the matriarch at the center of a sprawling family that spanned both coasts. Her family members fondly remember her tight hugs, occasionally wild stories, knowledge of all family matters, ice cream for breakfast, and her truly unconditional love. She was predeceased by her husband, Ed Hugus, and her son, Paul Sanford, as well as three sisters and one brother. She is survived by her sons Arthur (Michelle) Sanford of San Diego, CA; Brian Sanford (Linnea Leopold) of Felton, CA; daughter Jane (Larry) Stabile of Cambridge; and daughter-in-law Paula Sanford of Aptos, CA. Other survivors include eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog, Banjo. Memorial gifts may be made to the Barbara H. Sanford Endowed Scholarship Fund at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine by visiting A service of remembrance for family and friends will be held at a later date.
