Cammie King Conlon
FORT BRAGG, Calif. (AP) — Cammie King Conlon, the former child actress who portrayed the doomed daughter of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone With the Wind," has died at the age of 76.

She died of lung cancer Wednesday morning at her Fort Bragg home on California's north coast, said friend Bruce Lewis. Her son, Matthew Ned Conlon, was by her side.

Conlon was picked to play the small, but pivotal role of Bonnie Blue Butler in the 1939 Civil War epic at age 4. Her character's death in a fall from a pony irrevocably damages Rhett and Scarlett's tumultuous marriage.

Conlon also voiced the young doe Faline in Walt Disney's "Bambi" three years later. It would be her final film role.

"My mother decided she wanted me to have a normal childhood," she wrote on her blog, which talked about her brief career and a memoir she published last year on her "Gone With the Wind" experience. She often joked with interviewers that she had "peaked at 5."

The Los Angeles native graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in communications and spent two years editing California Pictorial magazine. She moved to Mendocino County 30 years ago, working as director of the Kelly House museum and as a publicist for the Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce and the Little River Inn.

Conlon stayed in touch with her "Gone With the Wind" family. On Sunday night, she took a call from Olivia de Havilland, who played Scarlett's sweet-hearted nemesis Melanie in the film, her son said.

"It's amazing because she is so much more than Bonnie Blue Butler, but ... that is what she is remembered for, and it's a pretty great thing to be remembered for," Matthew Conlon said. "Nobody told it better than Mom — when you debut in 'Gone with the Wind,' it's downhill."

She told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat last year that she had few clear memories of her time on the studio lot that served as the set for the fictional plantation Tara.

One was watching her stunt double for the pony scene, a male dwarf, smoking a cigarette while dressed in a reproduction of her riding habit costume. Another was being scratched by Clark Gable's mustache in the scene where Rhett Butler hugs and kisses his cherished daughter.

"As the years have gone by, I realize it's an honor, and it's so humbling," she had said. "I had nothing to do with it. I was 5. They said 'Stand here. Do this.' And yet it's resulted in this incredible experience."

Conlon spent much her adult life gamely reprising her Bonnie Blue days for "Gone With the Wind" enthusiasts. She appeared at parades, retrospectives, museum exhibits and anniversary celebrations for the film in both Georgia, where the movie was set, and in California.

Just last year, she donned her hoop skirt and petticoat again to visit a middle school that was studying the Civil War.

"It wasn't her whole life, but she had a lot of fun with it," Lewis said.

Conlon is survived by her son and a daughter, Katie Conlon Byrne. A memorial service is planned for next week in Fort Bragg. Another will be held in Los Angeles on Sept. 22 and a third at a later date in Marietta, Ga., home of the Gone With the Wind Museum.

I got to meet commie in my Dora fl. She was quite the lady. She even signed my copy of gwtw for me. I was really sorry for her families loss...such an inspiring lady".........

I'll never forget reading GWTW for the first time. My 10th grade English teacher had suggested I read this book for a book report. I was on the school bus enroute home when I came to the part where Little Bonnie was thrown from her pony and died. I started crying, tears just rushing down my face. My biology teacher was the substitute driver that day; he looked in the mirror checking on us students and saw my crying. I had to tell him why. Cammie, you brought "Little Bonnie" to life, as did all the other actors and actresses. You are forever in my heart.

My favorite memory of Cammie is when she was our special guest when we played Max Steiner's Gone With The Wind concert suite with Coachella Valley Symphony April 2001. She said "To have been held and kissed by Clark Cable, and to have no memory of it whatsoever, is truly one of life's cruelest tricks." Rest in Peace, Cammie. So sorry to hear of Ms. Cammie's passing. I find myself very fortunate to have met her and to have seen her just months ago. She had intrigued me my whole life as the little girl who met a tragic death in what's quite possibly the greatest movie of all time. I feel that she impacted many and was so pleased to find that she was a very down to earth, pleasant lady. I regret that I will never have another chance to meet her again. May her family find comfort in the legacy she left.

I met Cammie about 5 years ago, in Washington, Ga. I told her that I had just adopted two cats and was naming one Bonnie, and the other Cammie. She said she couldn't wait to get home & tell her friends that a lady in Wash., Ga. would be calling "Cammie, Cammie, Cammie-come on in the house". She autographed a picture, from GWTW-to Cammie, from Cammie. I was honored to meet her-she was delightful!!!!

I had the pleasure of knowing "Mrs. Conlon" for the last 10 years. I'll remember attending a "Windie" event with Cammie, Mickey K. and Patrick C. in Florida about 5 years ago, hearing Cammie speak during a hurricane in Florida, and cold weather in Salt Lake City, "performing" in Malibu going to movies up in Ft. Bragg, and Thanksgivings in Oakland. She always spoke and acted from the heart, and her sense of humor added joy to my life. I cannot imagine NOT having her in my life, but I have lots of fond memories.

Dear Cammie- Thanks so much for being a part of our lives since St. Paul's Grammar School in Los Angeles. We are all so lucky to have been a part of a group that has kept in touch for many decades. We shared so many dreams & memories, from dancing to Gordon Jenkins "Beware My Foolish Heart" in the Seventh Grade, to our last get-together in 2008, when you and your friend dressed up as High School Cheerleaders. You guys were hilarious! Please give our best to all our classmates who have gone before you, and to Sisters Stella Marie, Stanisia, Agnetis, etc. We'll sure miss you! Also, please save us a place, as we know you have influence with the Good Lord. --Love & Prayers,-Jan & Mike King (St.Paul's-1948)

Although Cammie said she peaked at 5, her grace, dignity, wild wit, and love was more than any friend could have asked from another. I will forever remember our private visits, dinners, and trips together. Although the world was blessed with "Bonnie Blue" and GWTW, her friends were blessed with a precious loving friendship that could never peak. She had humility and wonderful stories of life. My world is better because of her, and I have been taught to live every day with gratitude. This is just one of the things she taught me well. God's speed to you dear, kind Cammie.

Our sincere condolences. I, too, remember her in Gone With The Wind. The great movie of ALL time.
