CAROLINE HORVITZ Obituary

HORVITZ, Caroline A Beacon of Resilience and Brilliance Caroline Hill Horvitz, a beacon of resilience and brilliance, graced the world from May 16, 1988 until April 24, 2025. Born in Miami, Florida, Caroline's remarkable life began with the challenges of severe cerebral palsy and profound deafness. Her twin, Catherine, died shortly after birth. She required constant care throughout her extraordinary life, yet her spirit soared above these obstacles. In September 1992, her family relocated to Beverly, Massachusetts, where Caroline's academic career began at the Beverly School for the Deaf. She later attended Beverly High School and then embraced homeschooling, eventually earning an Associate's degree from Mount Wachusett Community College. Her insatiable thirst for knowledge led her to Mount Holyoke College, where she pursued a Bachelor's degree and graduated to a standing ovation and then to Simmons College, where she acquired two Master's degrees. Caroline's linguistic prowess was unparalleled as she read in English, Latin, Italian and French and understood Signing Exact English, British, French, Italian, German, and Arabic sign languages. Her sign language vocabulary was created by her longtime caregiver and companion, Cheryl Lauricella and encompassed an astonishing 100,000 words from basic to graduate level. Cheryl was by all accounts the "Annie Sullivan" to Caroline's "Hellen Keller" and the pair was lovingly referred to as "Cheryline". Caroline worked and volunteered at the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum, doing research on a series of previously unidentified acquisitions. She had spent multiple summers cataloging Etruscan artifacts at the archaeological site near Murlo, Italy, leaving an indelible mark as a published scholar and expert in Etruscan fibulae. At the time of her passing, Caroline was a cherished professor at UMass Amherst, captivating students with her courses in Roman Archaeology, Roman Religion and Pompeii. Her kindness, humor, profound knowledge and engaging teaching style made her a beloved figure in the academic community. She was an inveterate traveler having visited almost 80 countries and both the Arctic and Antarctic regions. An adventurer at heart there was nothing off limits in her mind. Her first international trip was to Egypt in 2001, where she was one of the last people to be allowed to visit the tomb of Nefertiri. Caroline was loved by all; disliked by none. She rarely complained about her physical condition. She loved children and dogs, her three papillons, Perseus, Anubis and Imhotep, were always by her side. She never missed an opportunity for generosity and touched countless people's lives from family to strangers. Caroline is survived by her father, Jeffrey Horvitz; her stepmother, Carol Horvitz; her sister, Christina Murphy; her brother-in-law, Sean Murphy; her nephews Greyson and Cameron; and her mother, Linda Horvitz. Her legacy of courage, intellect and compassion will continue to inspire all who knew her. Visiting Hours: May 3, 2025, from 9 to 11AM. Her Funeral Service will be at Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., BEVERLY, on May 3, 2025, at 11AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. The family requests no flowers or gifts. Contributions in her memory may be made to one of her favorite charities: Catherine Hill Horvitz Perinatology Fund, Attn: Rachel Cameau, Don Soffer Clinical Research Center, 1120 NW 14th Street, (R100) 9th Floor, Miami, FL 33136 or Safe Haven Medical Outreach,1308 E. Caroline and I laughed about my "broken signing." She was so kind to me, when I worked for the collection.
Thanks, Caroline.

We met Caroline 30 years ago. Back then, she was a little girl, all dark eyes and black curls. Cheryl, our baby sister, was her assistant and far more importantly, her lifelong, devoted, loving friend. We remember Caroline with Christina in Beverly, so many times in Turnpike, when visiting Munich and us with Cheryl, Kristine and Stephanie, or last December in Worcester. Caroline was part of our family.
Finding the right words to best describe Caroline is beyond us. She was so incredibly unique, frighteningly smart and inspiring to everyone who was lucky enough to meet her. So we decided to cheat and borrow the words of William Henley. To us, this poem describes Caroline: an unwavering, undefeated and unconquered, beautiful, beautiful soul. And while the thought of never being able to see her smile again saddens us deeply, we cannot help but feel so incredibly grateful to have known Caroline.

Invictus
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

These past days, I have been flooded with memories of Caroline - a brilliant, beautiful soul I first met when she was just a young girl, who quickly became a cherished part of my family. It feels impossible to find the words to truly capture all that she was and all that she meant to us.

Her infectious laughter and that little mischievous side grin - especially when she was up to some shenanigans - are forever etched in my memory. Our adventures together, whether camping, visiting Disney, celebrating family holidays and BBQs, or just random FaceTimes where she eagerly shared her latest ideas and news, are moments I will hold in my heart.

Starting in high school, Caroline would send me the papers she wrote for her assignments, for my feedback and our discussion. She kept up this tradition through college, and by the time she was deep into her double master´s program, sending me thesis papers and abstracts, she had long surpassed me. It was a true privilege to witness her remarkable, resilient journey - to see her accomplish goals others might have thought impossible. The limitations of her body never, ever held her back.

After perhaps the millionth viewing of The Mummy as a child, Caroline announced - just like the character of Evie - that she, too, would become an Egyptologist, working at a museum surrounded by ancient artifacts. Her sense of adventure and the brilliance of her mind truly had no limits.

I was deeply grateful for Caroline´s keen insight and leadership as a Board Member for Safe Haven Medical Outreach. Her contributions to our work with children with disabilities, and her unwavering commitment to the ongoing professional development of our clinical staff, saved countless lives and improved the quality of life for so many in need.

I will miss her kindness, her wicked sense of humor, and the way she would try to convince me to be "Team Caroline" at Christmas when she wanted to order way too many snacks from Harrods.

This small space cannot even begin to capture the fullness of Caroline´s life, her spirit, or the profound impact she had on those who knew her. She will forever be missed.

I remember when we first met in school, you were laying when I approached to her I thought who´s that? She´s so pretty! Everything else were blurry all I see her that´s it and I asked wanna play? And she smiled and from there our friendship become unique. I always stay over her house, we watch movies together talk about clothes and many many memories together. She is like my sister and she´s an angel. She´s strong, silly, hero, and so sweet. I´ll always remember our friendship and memories.

Caroline, the bond we share transcends space and time. You will always be my baby sister, my hero and the love of my life.

Caroline was a remarkable child whom I had the privilege of watching grow into an extraordinary woman. It is easy to express my love and admiration for her, but difficult to capture in so few words. Life threw more challenges her way than most of us could imagine, but her obstacles never defined her. She was defined by her achievements, her spirit, and the incredible light she brought into the lives of everyone who knew her.
Some of my fondest memories of Caroline are from her childhood. My favorite was teaching her and her sister how to camp and fish. Watching her excitement and huge, infectious smile are the images I´ll hold onto forever. She embraced every new adventure with open arms and a fearless heart, living a life full of discovery, passion, and joy. Her curiosity knew no bounds, and her zest for life could turn the simplest experience into something extraordinary.
She taught all of us what true strength looks like, not in grand gestures, but in the way she faced each day with courage, laughter, and a refusal to let anything hold her back.
She leaves behind a legacy of resilience, wonder, and love. Our entire family will miss her deeply. We are so grateful for the memories and lessons she shared just by living the way she did. She showed us how beautiful life can be, even and especially when it´s not easy.
