CHARLES BYRNE Obituary

BYRNE, Charles L. Sr. Age 93, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2019, at his home in Linden Ponds, in Hingham, surrounded by family. Charlie was born and raised in Dorchester, where he lived most of his life until retirement to Yarmouth. Beloved husband of sixty-four years to his adored wife, and best friend, the late Margaret T. "Peg" (Smith) Byrne. Loving and devoted father of Patricia Byrne of Chestnut Hill, James E. Byrne (Jacqueline) of Dorchester, Charles L. Byrne, Jr. (ret. Boston P.D.) (Jane) of Braintree, Kathleen Byrne of Squantum, Teresa Sullivan (John) of Braintree, and MaryAnn Hurley of Abington. Cherished "Grandpa" of Brendan (Charlotte), Deirdre, Maggie, Bernadette, Brian and Delia Byrne, Elizabeth and Jay Gribaudo, Sean and Colleen Sullivan, and Erin and Patrick Hurley. Dear great-grandfather of Bridgette, Rory and James Byrne. Loving son of the late Edmund and Cecelia Byrne. Devoted brother of Barbara (late Bob) Curtin McClain of Braintree, and the late Helen (late George) Cully, and Edmund (late Jan) Byrne, Jr., and brother-in-law to the late Frances (Smith) and Tino Spatola. Loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. Ret. Lt. Detective Inspector, Mass. State Police; former Sgt. Boston P.D.; former Chairman, Boston Licensing Board. Veteran WWII, U.S. Navy. Graduate of Boston English High School. Years later, while raising six kids and working full time, he went to college nights and graduated from Northeastern University. Charlie was a kind, honest, caring and determined man. He was quick-witted and possessed a great, subtle sense of humor. Charlie quietly helped many during his lifetime and actively supported his St. Gregory's parish, as a volunteer for various fundraising efforts, CYO, and as President of the Holy Name Society. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 180, and one of the founders and a coach of Dorchester Lower Mills Youth Hockey. He was a volunteer for many causes, including special needs children, the March of Dimes, and the Italian Home for Children. Charlie and his wife Margaret spent many happy retirement years on the Cape, and in Naples, FL, in the company of family and friends. Charlie enjoyed golfing and playing cards, sports, travel, old Westerns, dining out, and singing to the tunes as Peg played the piano. He was a devoted and loving husband, and father who led by example and, most of all, loved being in the company of his family, cherishing time spent with his wife, kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. He was a good man who will be greatly missed. Visiting hours in the John J. O'Connor & Son Funeral Home, 740 Adams St. (near Gallivan Blvd.), DORCHESTER, on Friday, January 25, 2019, from 8-9:30 AM.
