CHARLOTTE WINSLOW Obituary

WINSLOW, Charlotte Holt Lindgren Age 98 of Auburndale, MA, formerly of Ipswich, died on November 26, 2022. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Boston University Emeritus Professor Dr. Donald J. Winslow. Born in Ipswich on January 5, 1924 to Hilmer H. And Grace (Whittier) Lindgren, she graduated from Ipswich High School in 1941. She was active in The First Church of Ipswich for many years. After receiving an A.B. degree in English from Boston University, she taught at Pinkerton Academy in Derry N.H., and after receiving an M.A. Degree at B.U., she taught at Medfield High School. She returned to Boston University as Administrative Assistant to the Dean and Lecturer in the evening division. She completed her Ph.D. in 1961 and became Professor of English at Emerson College where she remained for 29 years. There, she became chair of the English Department, was head of the Faculty Assembly, and led several major committees. She loved teaching and many of her past students remained in touch with her throughout her life. Charlotte enjoyed travel whether sailing in Maine or writing, researching, or dabbling in watercolors in Europe. She traveled extensively in Great Britain, Europe, and Egypt, for ten years as a teacher in the Emerson Summer School Abroad, and later with her husband. Eventually they settled down spending summers in Dorset, England, where they made lifelong friends and were active in both the Thomas Hardy and William Barnes Societies. When age and health forced them to give up going to England, Jill Bryant, whom Charlotte affectionately called her English daughter, came regularly to visit her in New England. Author of a biography novelist of Gerald Warner Brace, who had been her college mentor, and several books on William Barnes, Dorset dialect poet, Charlotte also published numerous articles and reviews in scholarly journals, as well as a family history. She received an honorary degree from Emerson College, was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, recipient of a lifetime achievement award from Who's Who, and Overseer of Lasell College. She was the historian of the John Winthrop Society, and a longtime volunteer at the Newton Library. She was very fond of her family, especially her sister, Ruth Stevens of Wenham, who predeceased her, and her brother, Professor David Treadwell Lindgren, and his wife Dora of Washington, D.C. She was proud of her six nephews; five great-nephews; three great-nieces; and two stepgrandchildren. Her two stepsons, Paul and Sanford Winslow, predeceased her. She was fortunate to have many kind and devoted friends, especially her daughter-in-law, Eileen Winslow. A private committal service will be held Thursday, December 1, 2022 at Highland Cemetery in Ipswich. Arrangements are under the direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of IPSWICH. A Celebration of her Life will be held Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 11am, at the First Church in Ipswich, 1 Meetinghouse Green Ipswich, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Emerson College Charlotte H. Lindgren Scholarship Fund, 120 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02116.
