CHIP BOYLE Obituary

BOYLE, Chip Of Rarotonga, Cook Islands, passed away, on September 5, 2023, at the age of 70. He was the cherished husband and soulmate of Claire Michihara for 49 years. Born in 1952, Chip grew up in Dover and Westwood, graduating from Westwood High in 1971, where he excelled as an athlete. He attended UMass Amherst, before moving to Hawaii in 1974, where he met Claire and discovered his passion for diving and marine biology. In the 1980s, they moved to Rarotonga, in the South Pacific. A superb diver, sometimes going as deep as 500 feet, Chip discovered more than a dozen new species of fish. A natural raconteur, he was well-liked. You could always count on his wry sense of humor and brilliant smile. Chip was the son of the late Jack & Mary Boyle of Westwood; and brother to six siblings, Chris McGuire of Manchester by the Sea, Jay Boyle and his wife, Jane Hart of Westwood, Jamie Boyle of Sedona, Arizona, Andy Boyle and his wife, Melissa Moore-Boyle of Norwood, Steve Boyle and his companion, Trish Barry of Punta Gorda, Florida and Nick Boyle and his wife, Wendy Boyle of Pasadena, California. On September 16, 2023, Chip was buried at sea, off the coast of Rarotonga. He quietly slipped into the water, covered with flower leis and embarked on his final deep dive.
