DANIEL CLIFFORD Obituary

CLIFFORD, Daniel Francis Daniel Francis Clifford, 74, a longtime Newton resident and commercial real estate consultant, appraiser (MAI) and reviewer, died at home from Melanoma on Sunday, June 25. He leaves his wife Margi Butler; daughter, Irene; son, Jay and his wife Denisse; stepson David Winbourne and his wife Justine, his brothers Doug and Robert, sisters-in-law Sandra and Pat, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of friends. He is predeceased by his brothers John and Roger. Dan operated his own commercial real estate consulting firm in Newton for over twenty-five years after working for a number of local firms, and he was a political activist. He served as ward chairperson in the local Democratic Party until recently. He came from a humble background, the middle child in a family of five boys, raised by a single mother in Hudson, MA. Dan started working at the age of ten with a paper route and worked until he was unable to continue. Dan became active in politics at a young age. In high school, he was president of his class for three years and head of the student council as a senior, a role he repeated in college. He was the first in his family to attend college at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina. His two older brothers, who came back from Vietnam and joined the anti-war movement, influenced Dan to oppose the Vietnam War. In 1981 after working his way up in the union as a bartender at the Copley Plaza Hotel, Dan was elected Secretary Treasurer of Local 26 of the Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Workers Union in Boston, a local of over 5000 members, representing the employees of major hotels and food service workers in the Boston area. In 1984, he was on the campaign staff for John Kerry's first senatorial victory. And from then until this year, he and his family have campaigned for Democratic candidates and progressive issues and have marched in innumerable protests. Dan was an avid Boston sports fan, an avid reader, and an avid traveler. He and his family explored National Parks and monuments all over the country from the Dry Tortugas off the Florida Keys to Denali National Park in Alaska. Wherever Dan went, he came back with stories. Dan was a great story teller with an infectious laugh that often took over the story before it ended. His favorite role was that of husband and father. He was a friend to many people. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, friendship, loyalty, his wonderful stories, and his knowledge of politics and real estate. Burial services will be private. A Memorial and Celebration of Dan's life will be at the Allen Ctr., 35 Webster St., Newton, MA on Sunday, July 9, 2023 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm. Please visit Brezniakfd.com for details. Shiva will be held from 6:30pm – 8:30pm on July 9th at the family home in Newton. Donations may be directed to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute through Dan's friend Stephen Najarian, who is running in the Falmouth Road Race in Dan's honor at http://danafarber.jimmyfund.org/goto/stephen_najarian.

I will always credit Dan with being my first professional mentor. Dan's impressive but humble intelligence was only overshadowed by his dry wit and patience. He would always take the time to answer a question or thoroughly explain a concept (often with a great anecdote or story). I am grateful to have known Dan for almost 30 years and appreciated not only the steady professional advice but also the true friendship. The genuine but subdued laughter, the kindness, the breadth of experiences (not just in his profession - could anyone picture Danny as a blackjack dealer in Tahoe?...the thought makes me laugh even now). I'm sure I'm one among many that have similar experiences and memories of Dan. An irreplaceable character and this is a tremendous loss, but I am here to state that he made an impact in my life and he will not be forgotten. We should all be so fortunate to make such an impactful life.

Love and strength to my old dorm mate and friend, Margi, and to the wider family. I never knew Dan but he was clearly a talented and principled man. I lost my own dad as a teenager so I know how intense that loss can be. May the whole family keep Dan in your hearts and minds. Blessings.

Among the buddhas insights was that the evil caused by human ignorance could only ne overcome by cultivation compassion and wisdom, Danny did this as naturally as breathing, he was kind, generous, helpful and politically astute: lasting solution need politics.
He will always be missed.

We are cousins of Danny´s and have had the privilege of knowing him over the years. When he and Margi married, he easily gained the approval of all the Butler aunts. They saw in him a kind, respectful and caring man who melded into the family. Danny was interested in us and we in him. We learned a lot about politics, government and real estate from this wise and involved man. He would travel far and wide to attend family events which we all appreciated. He was extremely knowledgeable even though he said Margi was the student. Thank you Danny for all you have done for your family and ours. See you in Cape heaven!

I just happened to see this while searching for another friend. I spoke with Danny when he told me about his brother John's passing and although he let me know about his cancer he never told me how serious it was. I first met Danny at the Copley Plaza where we had many laughs. What a memorable laugh he had. Through the years we would occasionally speak and it was like picking up where we left off. I know he'll be missed by his family and friends because he was such a joy to know. Rest In Peace Danny.

Just stumbled on this obit in the Sunday Globe and am so stunned. Danny had such a big life. I last saw him and Margie pre-Covid at that great party at Margo´s, where we rekindled old stories about the Copley and recalled our glory days with Local 26.
So sorry for your loss Margie.
He was really such a good egg.
Rest in peace old friend
