DANNY SCHECHTER Obituary

Schechter, Danny Died on March 19, in New York City. Danny Schechter, aka "The News Dissector" aka "troublemaker," grew up in the Bronx, in the progressive, union-sponsored Amalgamated Houses. His immigrant grandparents were garment workers who brought their socialist ideals with them from the Old Country. His mother, Ruth Lisa Schechter, was a secretary who became a poet. His father, Jerry Schechter, was a pattern-maker who became a sculptor. Danny attended DeWitt Clinton H.S., where he served as the editor-in-chief of the legendary Clinton News. From there it was on to Cornell, Syracuse, the London School of Economics, and Harvard as a Neiman Fellow. But this is only a small part of his life's journey. He joined the Northern Student Movement in high school and became actively involved in the Civil Rights Movement, going down to Mississippi in 1964. He became a leader in the movement to end the Vietnam War, was a member of SDS and began a lifelong commitment to South Africa in 1967 as an original member of the "London Recruits." He fought tirelessly against Apartheid from then on. Danny never hesitated to put his convictions on the line. In the 1970s, he turned back to his first love—journalism–and became the "news dissector" at radio station WBCN in Boston. He wove news and music together in collages that not only reported the day's events but also helped explain how the world worked. He was a huge influence on those who valued his independent perspective—and trusted him. He went on to become a prolific, Emmy award-winning TV producer and filmmaker, who made "South Africa Now", 6 films about Mandela, and spent decades criticizing and cajoling the media to do a better job covering the news. He interviewed Bob Dylan. He walked with Jesse Jackson. He embraced the Dali Lama. Malcolm X nicknamed him "Danny X." He was invited by Nelson Mandela to his inauguration. He was determined to let "justice roll down like waters" and to see all people free. His commitment and integrity were never for sale. Friend to thousands. Great and loving dad to Sarah, brother to Bill, and uncle to Ethan and Jamie. He was so much fun. So much energy. A solar flare. A meteor across our sky. If there is an afterlife, you should soon be receiving a blog post from our beloved Danny Schechter, "the news dissector." In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Danny's name to Cornell University, Cornell University Office of Alumni Affairs, 130 E. Seneca Street, Ithaca, NY 14850. Please specify that the donation is for the "Civil Rights History & Memorial Project," which will honor Cornell students–like Danny–who went down south during the 1960's. We do not want this history to be lost, but to live on and inspire students today. A celebration of Danny's life will be held in New York City, at a date to be announced.

Not sure what to say?

Danny recruited me in 1972 to produce a weekly
hour long criminal justice news magazine called Lock Up dealing with the Mass electronic cesspools called Prison.
We remained in touch and he later went on to Executive Produce produce a doc I was working
on called 911 Press For Truth.
Danny Schecter hasn´t gone anywhere.
I suspect he will be onboard for my next contact with the universe.

I grew up in Boston and listened very closely to WBCN... Charles and Danny assisted me through not just the world of music but also thought. As a young teen in Boston, the 60's were chaotic and tumultuous and I appreciated Danny for his straight talk and his virtue. I could feel what Danny was feeling and discussing because I was seeing it and experiencing it as well. RIP Danny.... you continue to inspire.

Danny came into my life in 1969, when I was twelve years old, and when he was the News Director/Dissector of WBCN Radio. He at once became a voice and source that I could trust. Twenty years later, he became a valued and treasured personal friend. Today, I myself work in radio. I wouldnt be in that medium without him, and I remain guided by his values and example. Thank you so much, Danny, for being such a great mentor, teacher, and friend.

Danny and I met through a friend via telephone conversation. We LOL when we realized we both shared the same birthday. During our jaunts together at political events and my visits to NYC he taught me about the news business and I taught him about Samuel J Tilden. Danny encouraged me (as have others) to keep writing about Tilden to get the message out...So thank you my friend - I will miss you and your great sense of knowledge and humor...Condolences to his family and friends of which he had many...Danny was one in a million!!!

I met Danny when I was a wide eyed first year undergraduate at the London School of Economics. He became for me a benevolent and funny big brother - opening my eyes to the real dynamics of US politics, South Africa and great music! I last saw him ten years ago when I and a colleague were in NYC. He took us on a whirlwind alternative tour of the city - we didn't stop laughing and eating. Will miss him and the emails. With love.

making fragments
breaking down

and what lasts through time

perishable
surrounded by dangerous fragility
by merciless waters and threats."

Danny was teaching Investigative Journalism at the New School for social research 1985-7. He made the world go round happily. One day he appeared really anxious. So we learnt that he had a quarrel with his girl friend who had snatched away his computers' hard and had succeeded to break down that wonderful composure of his; because he wanted to finish his writing in a way that had become impossible by her mischief. He forgave all bad intentions he had a bigger heart than those who were arrogant. He was simply beyond their boarders in a transcendental manner

And it must be said, Danny was a world class dancer. We met on a dance floor and became friends for life. He was a big part of my radicalization and awakening; his passion and commitment were an inspiration. He will be missed by many.

He was a major figure in my life long before he became a cherished personal friend. He was one of the chief inspirations in my life--a man whose life and work said that you can indeed make a difference in this world doing what you want--and need--to do. He was a major figure of the thriving Boston counterculture and alternative media scene of the late 1960's and 1970's--perhaps, the single most important figure. (So, Globe, how about a big article about Danny? He certainly deserves one!) He helped to make Boston an amazing place in those days. And, unlike so many others, he never gave up or sold or burnt out, even when power, money and fame beckoned. His accomplishments speak for themselves. No journalist in the world was more responsible for dismantling apartheid in South Africa than Danny Schechter. And his documentary films did a better job of predicting the 2008 financial collapse than anyone else. It was an honor and privilege to have lived in his time and experienced his work, and it was a joy to know him personally. The greatest tribute I can give him is this: after a career lasting half a century, we need him now more than ever.

Hard for even a "wordsmith" to know what to say after I've written so much about him and reviewed so much of his work--reading the Facebook page, I realize how much I have missed. I was in Boston during the 70s and never crossed paths with him or his people--what a loss, but I hope that I partially made up for it later.

Peace.

Danny didn't know me and I didn't know him, but he was a true teacher and he taught lessons from the news of the day in a manner that a young, impressionable individual could understand. Truly one of a kind. You will be missed.

Very sad to hear of Danny's passing. I knew him when I worked on the Listener Line at WBCN. He had a photo of himself with Tina Turner on the outside of the newsroom door. I mentioned this to him years later and he told me that she had him come on stage and dance with her during one of her concerts. Wish there was some footage of it, as I would have loved to see that. R.I.P., Danny. You will be missed.

Miss the Bronx accent you never lost, and the "Okay?" at the end of every wonderful sentence when you spoke. Miss the throaty laugh and the cynical sense of humor-- But mostly miss the chutzpah you had as an investigator and journalist. They don't make 'em like you anymore, my friend. Sleep in peace knowing you left a legacy and a huge footprint in the world of insightful (or should I say "inciteful" ) news making.
