I am reminded each year of the void Dr. Dodwell's death has left in my eye healthcare. This pales though in comparison to the loss to his family and the community at large. He was a gem.

I know this is late. I just came across the obituary for David. I am deeply stunned and sadden at such a young loss. I knew David back in Lynnfield as a good friend; I even did some oil paintings for him when he was recovering from an illness those many, many years ago. He was a bright star of compassion and intellect. I am so desperately sorry for your loss. My deepest condolences and good wishes. To the Family of Dr. Dodwell, I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I just learned of this and I feel a tremendous sense of loss and sadness. Dr. Dodwell was someone I trusted. He really saved the vision in my left eye. I was very frightened of the procedure so having a good relationship was really important to me. Over the past decade I have continued see Dr. Dodwell. I looked forward to going to see him, enjoying his witt and dry sense of humor. He has done much good in the world, and will always be remembered. My deepest sympathy to the family.

My heart is deeply saddened upon hearing of the passing of Dr Dodwell...I first met him a little over 20yrs ago when referred for a possible retina detachment. I was greatly touched when he came into the office on a Saturday afternoon from the golf course to see me and then had me recite back the three signs of a retinol detachment before letting me leave the office...at that time it was only gel break down but it saved the sight in my right eye a few years later by recalling what Dr Dodwell had taught me when I did indeed have a retina detachment...then more recently in March of this year Dr Dowell performed a long surgery and saved the sight in my left eye which had 4 holes, a tear and a retina detachment...even though I was still under his care as not completely healed yet my vision had came back to 20/20 and he told me if all was good my next check up I "could fire him"..which showed his good sense of humor along with his caring and concern for his patients...I held Dr Dodwell in the highest regards with admiration for his expertise and his willingness to go the extra mile to help save the sight of his patients...My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to his family for their loss...May God bring them peace and comfort!!

To the Dodwell family, my deepest condolences. I met David through Wayne and although I didn't know him that well, it was obvious, he was cut from the same Dodwell piece of cloth. A terrible loss. May the wonderful memories carry you through this difficult time.

June 19, 2015

My mother, Lucille Scoggins, and brother-in-law, Francis Grafford, (now both deceased in 2014), were patients of Dr. Dodwell for many years. If not for his care, both would have been blind from macular degeneration. He enabled them to enjoy the final few years of their lives with sight. He was so compassionate and caring...he even came in on a Sunday when my mom was having problems. Our entire family admired him greatly and are so sorry to hear of his passing. Please accept our sincere condolences.

It is with great shock and sadness to read of David's passing. I had the privilege of getting to know him by being his hair stylist. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers to his family at this time of sadness.

Reading about the loss of David Dodwell brings back such memories of one of the brightest students at Lynnfield High School . Beyond being a great student in the sciences and math, David was a gifted writer. He also was a wonderful runner, played football and also played the piano during those days.

I first met him on a town project building a trail/walkway into preservation. During the summers he would travel the world doing travel documentaries before his days at Tufts. I recall he worked at MIT one summer on a research project.

His passion grew beyond medicinewhen he and Lori would go antiquing and collect depression glass - the collecting passion grew over the years and recall him reading auction catalogsLater years he came to NYC to work on designing the family home in Springfield that he took great pride in.

David, worked so hard in his career -- starting in NYC when he and Lori had their first child in NYC and he would spend hours in the hospital during his residency.

He will be missed by many. This past winter I was in India and a top Indian eye surgeon mentioned David was considered one of the best eye surgeons in the USA..and he was looking forward to seeing him in San Diego this past April.

Lori, Alex, Jacqueline and Avery my thoughts are with you at this time.

For you David ..be at peace.

David was a good friend in high school. I remember making pizza at his house, watching old B horror movies with him on NY Eve. He was a good hearted and gentle person. Even seeing him 20 years after school at reunion he offered to give me help with a business proposition...always wanted to help people. I am sure he was a fantastic husband , father and MD and will be missed by many.

I join the whole community in mourning the untimely death of Dr. Dodwell, my Dr. for the past year. His leadership in his field of expertise and his willingness to try new treatments encouraged me to try to correct a condition I experienced with a new drug. It was always so wonderful to meet with him and observe his thrill that the treatment he recommended worked on me. He will not be forgotten by those whose lives were changed by the vision his skill helped to restore. Deep sympathy to the family and staff who are left behind.

Words cannot begin to express the sadness I feel and the loss of such an outstanding Dr. I met him when we both were turning 50..our birthday were only a few days apart as well. So we had a lil joke between us about that. He had to give me injections in my eyes for histoplasmoses(sp). I know you had to of known how special you were to all your patients, but maybe that was very overwhelming as well....But I know you are in a very peaceful place with such serinity now..fly with the angels dr. and land every now and then to get sand between your toes...

June 11, 2015

I cannot begin to express the shock and sorrow that I experienced when learning of Dr. Dodwell's death. My sense of loss could not have been greater had he been a member of my own family. He was my eye doctor for the last five years and saved my vision when others had given up and had nothing more to offer. I believe that he and his office set the gold standard for how a medical practice should be run. Everyone at the IRC was consistently competent, helpful and friendly, and his office was a model of calm, professional efficiency. Dr. Dodwell fully explained any proposed treatment and took as much time as needed to make you feel completely comfortable with the treatment he provided. Unlike many other doctors, he always made you a full partner in any course of treatment. His competence and sense of humor put everyone at ease and instilled a tremendous degree of confidence in his ability. His death is a huge loss for the central Illinois area, the ophthalmological community at large, his friends, his staff and most of all his family. I am proud to have known Dr. Dodwell and extend my most since condolences to his family.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Dodwell's passing. Two years ago, I was a frightened patient with a detached retina. I am also a Cape Cod transplant and as soon as I saw Dr. Dodwell's Red Sox jersey, I knew we had something in common. He was a wonderful doctor and a very kind person; he always put me at ease with his wonderful sense of humor and warm smile.
I will always be grateful for his and Dr. Klass' professional skills and kindness.
God Bless you and your family Dr. Dodwell.

Dr. Dodwell reattached my retina after it had been detached for four days. He literally restored my sight! My wife had serious eye problems and Dr. Dodwell sent her to Philadelphia for eye cancer surgery. This saved her eye and possibly her life. He had overseen for her medical condition since that time.

My heart goes out to Lori and their children and to all others who were impacted by his life. I also have been a patient of his for many years. He was the first and only doctor who instilled hope and optimism about my diagnosis of retinitis pigmentosa. I was shocked to hear of his untimely death. Please accept my condolences.
Sincerely,

So very sorry to his family and friends .Such a huge loss to everyone .Prayers to his family near and far. This community was blessed to have had such an awesome Dr . He alone is responsible for my brothers sight . My brother was completely blind , and because of Dr Dodwell my brother is sighted and works everyday and can drive. He never let my brother give up, and Dr Dodwell never stopped working to get his eyesight back. . The kindness and laughter he showed our family will never be forgotten . Rest easy our friend .

To the family of Dr. Dodwell. What a shock... He fixed a torn retina for me back in November, and did a fanatic job. The first lows were also fantastic. I only knew him fit the few visits I had, but he was very knowledgeable and a great surgen. He will be missed friends, patients and family. You all will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I loved Dr. Dodwell, as I have been accompanying my mother for her treatments for 20 years or so. We saw him on May 28th. My heart is heavy and this is almost more than I can take in. His staff was tremendous. Deepest sympathy to all his family, friends and coworkers.
