DR. DAVID MILLER

MILLER, Dr. David Age 92, of Brookline MA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 4, 2024. Son of Morris Maharal Miller of Riga, Latvia and Miriam Friedman of Harlem, NY, he grew up in the Bronx and went to DeWitt Clinton High School. David received a combined BS and MS in physics and optometry at Columbia College, an MD at New York Medical College, served as a battle group surgeon at Fort Wainwright, Fairbanks, Alaska, and did his ophthalmology residency at the Mass General Hospital in Boston. Dave served as Chief of Ophthalmology at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School for over 20 years, where he won the Excellence in Teaching award in 1991. He authored numerous books, articles, and patents in the field of ophthalmology, as well as over 20 theatrical plays that explored medical murder mysteries, medical discoveries, and women in medicine. He was especially proud of his key role as the innovator of the Healon procedure for visco-elastic eye surgery with his student and partner in crime Rob Stegmann and the team at Pharmacia Biotech in Sweden, which has been used to help more than half a billion people worldwide since 1980, and for which he and Rob received the Innovator of the Year Award by the American Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons in 1990. He served on the humanitarian hospital ship SS HOPE in Colombia, Samoa, and Tunisia, and dedicated his career to mentoring medical residents and students and sharing his passion for ophthalmology and innovation with colleagues from throughout the U.S., as well as Brazil, Colombia, India, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, South Africa, and Sweden. Throughout his life, David shared his love of inventions, playwriting, cross-country skiing, and tennis with his family and his many friends and colleagues. He is survived by his wife and playwriting partner of 65 years, Renee (Moskowitz), four children Roger (Louise), Valerie, Rick, and Seth (Ruth), and nine grandchildren.
