I grew up across the street from Dermot in Worcester, but I did not know him until I was a practicing attorney in Boston, where he was a sitting judge. I do remember his family bloodhound, 'Mush', however. I believe my late sister, Martha, worked along with Dermot in the court system, but I cannot be sure.
Dermot & I shared two wonderful (now late) friends: Ted Schwalb and his sister, Brenda Starr.
It was a special experience to get to know Dermot starting in adulthood. I had no 'prior life' preconceived notions but for knowing we shared some close friends so that if the two of us were to eventually meet it, would be an immediate good experience and include some hometown laughs.
I have met lawyers in sustained recovery who speak glowingly of Dermot's fellowship in their recovery.
Dermot possessed great character, which is something one earns.

Dermot continues to live on in spirit through the friendship we shared in recovery for over 45 years. He is the best friend a person could have and his friendship is all about being true to yourself and others, caring about everyone, being there, understanding, knowing how to laugh, how to cry, being driven to create and share the beauty of his work, being fair, trustworthy, humble and a gift.

It was an honor and a pleasure knowing Dermot. You are gone but not forgotten.

Derry was a roommate at Harvard and a friend I always enjoyed seeing at reunions. In recent years we had kept in occasional touch by email. I admired his retirement turn to the arts and especially his drawings. Of course, I have long been impressed by his professional achievements, especially his commitment to justice for those in need of it and his service as a judge. And, with all his achievements and professional honors, he never lost an exceptional sense of honor.

Padraic, please accept my condolences on your loss of Dermot. What a remarkable career of contributions to fair treatment of the disenfranchised. (Also condolences on Sean, of whose passing I had not learned.)
I was relieved to learn that you and Mary are survivors!
I'll always be grateful for those fun times at the beach in Middletown, all of us entertained of course by reading through boxes of Sean's books.
Fondly,
Boyd

Derry, as I knew him in law school, was a brilliant and kind school mate who morphed into a very special wonderful friend. He gave of himself to causes to enhance the lives of people who were on the fringe because of established outdated rules and habits. And he changed people's lives dramatically because of his commitment to justice for all and his enormous heart. I am so sorry he has passed on, but I am so lucky I knew him.

I was fortunate to be friends with Dermot for over 20 years. This photo captures Dermot´s essence. He was a remarkable man who taught me many lessons in life. Among them courage, tenacity and determination all through his life. My condolences to his loving husband and my close friend Renato and the entire Meagher family

Ah. I just heard this. So sorry.
Dermot, we loved you and we'll miss you. Dermot was from the old days in that venerable institution, the proud Boston Municipal Court. Far from a vestige of a day gone by, as a very young judge, I found his thoughts to be helpful. He told me he affirmatively told people to not call him "judge" outside of the courthouse. In judicial portraits, he would mischievously unzip his robe as a form of mini-rebellion. He was a real Robespierre, LOL. The Robespierre reference is for Dermot's amusement. One time as a young judge I told him that I was annoyed that my courtroom clerk was issuing orders in my name without consulting me (of course, that clerk is a cherished friend now). Dermot retorted, "You're lucky he cares." He was usually right. And like that Clerk, Dermot cared.
