DOUGLAS SMITH Obituary

SMITH, Douglas Forbes Son of Marjorie Eldredge and Clark Smith, died on October 25, after a short illness. He was born in Miami, Florida, on January 5, 1951. He graduated from Palmetto High School in 1968 and from the University of Florida in 1972. After attending Officer Candidate School, he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard in Boston for three years. He received a master's degree in accounting from Northeastern University in 1977, worked at Arthur Andersen in Boston, and served as Controller of Thinking Machines Corporation of Cambridge from 1984 to 1994. For the past thirty years, he was a consultant CFO for startup medical technology firms. Doug met his wife, Rosamond, at the Boston Harbor Sailing Club. They were married at the Old North Church in Boston in 1983 and moved to Newburyport in 1985. He served on the board of the Custom House Maritime Museum and, for more than 30 years, was active at Emmaus House of Haverhill, where he helped found the Cycle for Shelter. He was an avid cyclist and sailor and a member of the Newburyport Masters Swim group for more than three decades. Doug reflected often on a life well lived after his diagnosis. He will be remembered as a good listener who showed up to help in times of need, known for his easy smile and humor. Doug leaves his wife and daughters, Cassandra (Robin Cunningham) and Deirdre (Govind Nagubandi); and grandchildren, Gigi and Remy Cunningham and Camille and Theo Nagubandi. A Memorial for Doug will be held in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in the Spring.
