EDWARD RUDMAN Obituary

RUDMAN, Edward I. Wealth Management Legend and Philanthropist, Dies at 83 Boston has lost a pioneer in wealth management and a leader in philanthropy. Edward I. Rudman died on January 21 at his home in Kentfield, California. After a noble struggle with Parkinson's disease, he passed away with his wife, Carole Rudman (née Reinhold), and children Jillian and Gary at his side. Ed's greatest joy was working to make people's lives better—by advising his clients or through his many commitments to philanthropy. Even though Parkinson's was a formidable foe, Ed never lost his smile, warmth, fight, or desire to share his wisdom with those around him. He was a mentor to friends and colleagues and an unofficial family member for many of his clients, providing insight into every element of their lives. A dear friend reflected that "his success was a tribute to Ed's business acumen, leadership skills, and client focus. More particularly, it came from the sheer joy that Ed derived from serving others. That was his secret sauce." Ed always believed in shooting for the moon and taking on challenges with determination and courage, even when the outcomes weren't clear. He grew up in Malden, MA's Suffolk Square neighborhood, where his father was a truck driver and his mother a homemaker. Ed attended Boston University as a "subway" student, living at home until his senior year when as President of his fraternity, he earned room and board in the house. He went on to Boston College Law School, where he received a JD, and then to New York University, where he earned an LLM in Taxation. Ed was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate degree from the New England School of Law. Ed worked as an executive with several financial services and private wealth firms, most prominently as the CEO of The Boston Company Financial Strategies, Inc. His professional career took a meaningful turn when he founded the wealth management firm Pell Rudman & Co. in 1980 with partner Tony Pell, which later became Atlantic Trust Company. The firm is now part of CIBC Private Wealth Advisors, Inc., with offices all over the US and Canada. Guided by a philosophy of giving back, Ed led by example and gave generously of his time and financial resources to causes that mattered deeply to him. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Beth Israel Hospital from 1991-1994 and held the title of Trustee Emeritus at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. From 1996 – 2006 he was Chairman of the Investment Committee for the Boston Combined Jewish Philanthropies. Ed was elected an Overseer of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1997 and a Trustee in 2001 and was elevated to Life Trustee in 2012. Upon retiring from Atlantic Trust in 2007, Ed continued to dedicate his efforts to helping people—specifically those suffering from neurological diseases. He launched Link Medicine Corporation; a life-sciences company devoted to developing disease-modifying therapies to treat neurodegenerative diseases. Ed also served on the advisory board of Dance for PD®, an innovative program designed in collaboration with the Mark Morris Dance Group to encourage people living with Parkinson's to keep dancing. In addition to trying to find treatments and a cure, he worked closely with doctors and the Beth Israel Hospital by volunteering to be part of a clinical trial in the spirit of advancing the understanding of Parkinson's to benefit future treatment approaches. Ed approached his personal life with the same joyful enthusiasm. He was an active traveler, connoisseur of the arts, accomplished tennis player, sports enthusiast (with a particular love of the Red Sox and Boston Celtics). He cherished his time and enduring friendships in Longboat Key, Florida and in the Berkshires where he frequented Tanglewood and Jacobs Pillow. Those who knew Ed will most remember his welcoming nature, humble spirit, and his uncanny ability to always do the right thing—by his friends, family, clients, and anyone whose life he touched. His passion for people, combined with his perspective, persistence, and unwavering kindness, defined his presence. He will be greatly missed by Carole Rudman, his wife and partner in life of 60 years, his children Jillian Rudman (Jim Humes), Gary Rudman (Justine Rudman, née Franks), his grandchildren Cody Rudman, Kyle Rudman, Isa Rudman, and Devon Humes, cousins and extended family, and countless friends from every chapter of his life. Just finding this out... my warmest regards to the Rudman family. I worked at Pell Rudman as one of my first jobs and was a little bit in awe of him. We also had a longboat key connection and one day he even stopped my dad on the beach wondering why he was wearing a Pell Rudman t shirt! We all had a great laugh over the confusion! A smart, kind, approachable guy... thanks for showing a young professional what it was like to work for someone you actually liked as an individual.

To Carol and family my sincere condolances. I know he battled Parkinsons valiantly for many years. I recall our days in fraternity, college, Catskill mountains and Law school.
May his memory be as a blessing to you and all his loved ones.

Ed, was a leader in all areas of his life....he was a young man heading to better and bigger things when I first met him as a young fraternity Brother. His obituary speaks for itself....he made it happen no matter what area of his life he was involved with.
My sincere condolences to Carol and his children. I know it has been a long medical journey for Ed and for his family. He was one of a kind!

Ed was a wonderful and dear friend and advisor to me during my 20 years with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Ed was always the smartest guy in the room as his friend Ed Linde often said. That was very true. Understated in his elegance yet direct and wry in his humor, I so enjoyed being in his company. The help and advice he gave to me on board relations was invaluable but his loving and caring, compassionate spirit was even more invaluable and it meant the world to me that he always made time to give me a helping hand. I just adored Ed and this news breaks my heart but he fought the good fight with the disease. If I learned one lesson from Ed it was to make every single day count. Ed was a precious gem. My deepest sympathies to Carole and his family. For the gifts he gave to me and all in his orbit, may his memory forever be a blessing ❤
