EDWARD SHAPIRO Obituary

SHAPIRO, Edward A. 82, of Newton, MA, a man of kindness, compassion, infectious curiosity, and a gift for uplifting and encouraging those around him, died peacefully on March 4, 2023, surrounded by his family. Ed was born in North Adams, MA, and educated at Union College and Boston University Law School. He had a thriving career as an attorney, as partner and founder of Shapiro, Israel and Weiner, and as an advisor and counselor to many individuals and businesses even through his retirement.  His practice was characterized by his perseverance; he never saw a closed door that could not be opened. He found joy in helping business owners, family, and friends solve problems and grow their businesses. He led a trade mission to Israel as founder of the New England-Israel Chamber of Commerce and served as the President of the fundraising arm for the Club de Madrid, which is made up of more than eighty former heads of state of democratic countries.  Judaism provided the framework for how he lived his life. He was a person of deep moral integrity. Above all, he was a loving and generous father, brother, grandfather, and husband. He loved feeling the wind by the ocean, was an accomplished bike rider, and enthusiastic fisherman. He enjoyed traveling the world and driving his favorite convertible. He leaves his loved ones with a sense of humor and optimism that lasted until the end of a life fully lived. He is survived by his loving wife Deborah Benik; his son David and wife Chrissy Shapiro; son Rob Shapiro and Lindy Salkin; stepson Alex Benik and wife Becky Bermont; and grandchildren Justin Grimes, Remy and Kemal Shapiro; Jasper, Luke, and Josh Shapiro; and Chloe and Louis Benik. He is also survived by his brothers Burton and Stuart Shapiro and sister Selma Shapiro. Funeral Services will be held at 11am on Monday, March 6 at Temple Emanuel, 385 Ward Street, Newton, MA. Burial is private. Shiva will be observed by the family at the home of David Shapiro on Tuesday, March 7 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.. Remembrances would be appreciated to The Greater Boston Food Bank, 70 South Bay Avenue, Boston, MA 02118, www.gbfb.org. Levine Chapels - Brookline (617) 277-8300 www.levinechapels.com

Hi Dave & Rob,

Just saw your father´s obituary from last year and want to extend my heartfelt condolences to you and your families.

I have couple of memories of your dad that I´d like to share.

1st memory was him getting the ugly lime green Packard (or was it a studebaker) and how he happy he was driving around in it.

2nd memory was him treating us to go see the movie space balls. After the movie he said I can´t believe I spent over $100 on this aweful movie.

Warmest Regards

The three of us grew up together, my brother Jamie, Eddie, and myself, the tag-a-long little sister, they were stuck with. We would run down to Main Street for the latest segment of Batman at one of the three movie theaters in town. I´ll miss you, Eddie, but you´ll always be my close third cousin who loved to tease and tickle me in my thoughts.

Shapiro Family- I had the pleasure of working with Eddie as a member of the Board of Directors of the New England Israel Chamber of Commerce. His support and leadership made the NEICC grow and thrive. In later years, I always enjoyed running into him and catching up. He was very gracious and warm. My heartfelt condolences. I am sorry for your loss.
