Eleanor Bump Obituary

Of Amherst MA, died at home on August 1, 2008 at the age of 100. Born January 10, 1908 in Longmeadow, MA, she was the daughter of Horatio Whittemore Myrick and Inez White Myrick. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College in the class of 1929 and, with her husband, continued a long association with the college. After living for extended periods in South Hadley, MA and Weston, MA, Eleanor moved to East Run Farm in Westminster West, VT, where she and her husband delighted in the family activities of raising cattle, haying the fields, and producing maple syrup. During her recent years as a resident of Applewood at Amherst, Eleanor flourished as an author and found special interest in and enjoyment of the nearby arboretum. Surviving are her children: Carolyn Marsh of Wellesley, MA, Susan Vancura of Providence, RI, and Jonathan Bump of Orwell, VT. Boardman Bump, her husband of 51 years, her son, Daniel, and her brothers Sterling and Norman preceded her in death. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A service to celebrate her life will be held on August 22, 2008 at 2:00 pm in the Willets-Hallowell Center on the Mount Holyoke College campus in South Hadley, MA. A reception will follow. (Directions to the Center can be found at http:// www.mtholyoke.edu/offices/con ference/directions.shtml.) Contributions in her memory can be made to the Town of Amherst Conservation Department, Orchard Arboretum Fund, and sent to One Spencer Drive, Amherst MA 01002, Attn. Peggy Andrews.

I have such clear memories of the family on Hemlock Rd and Ash Street in Weston and of Eleanor calmly and elegantly managing her home and growing family. She was a lovely and very erudite lady.
